Memorable Franconia Notch New Hampshire Elopement

Lauren & Elliot ELope in New Hampshire with dogs

SWELL & STONE / ADVENTURE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER / New Hamsphire & BEYOND

Lauren & Elliot began their stunning New Hampshire small outdoor wedding day with an adventure hike. It was before sunrise when we met in a parking lot and headed up the steep trail in front of us. They exclaimed while laughing that I could have told them that although it was a short hike it was straight up. But before we knew it we had arrived at the top and the stunning view silenced any protests from minutes before. Lauren quickly changed into her dress in the forest as I got Elliot into position for the first look as their two pups ran around having the time of their lives.

Just after the first look, the sun came up and we basked in its warm rays. After some more basking and checking out all the different views we hiked down and walked over to the lake that we had just viewed from above. The sun was streaming through the mountains there was fog dancing on the surface of the lake making for the perfect early fall/late summer vibes.

We hiked over to a more secluded spot and they read their private vows to one another while the dew burned off the trees and the no one around except for the mountains and their sweet dogs.

After a morning to remember we parted ways only to meet up again in the afternoon for the main event. As they were getting ready with family to help it was clear how much those who were there loved them. Lauren’s mom was helping her get ready while friends were setting up the table for the celebration. The officiant, another friend, was practicing his speech, and there was a buzz of joy in the air.

Lauren had a first look with her dad, which was the sweetest thing ever, and we took family formals before starting the ceremony. The ceremony began with their dogs zig-zagging the aisle, which was funny and kept things light. The ceremony was beautiful and joyful. And their recession was punctuated with orange bursts which made for an awesome photo.

The celebration was laid back and lovely. They had the meal catered, which allowed everyone to enjoy each moment. Lauren’s brother tended the bar, and there were teary-eyed speeches, followed by an array of desserts, including a doggy cake. The dogs (and the humans) enjoyed their day thoroughly, and in the end, that (along with being married) is mostly what Lauren and Elliot found most important.

I’ve been speechless since getting our sneak peek photos and still having a hard time finding the words to express my happiness and gratitude.

Kat is a master at her craft! Our micro-wedding was our first time having a professional photographer photograph us, so we didn’t know what to expect and just rolled with the entire day.

When we decided to elope with 14 close family members and friends we looked for an adventure elopement photographer. That then snowballed into getting married in NH and choosing 2 locations for sunrise photos. Kat was a huge help in bringing our vision to life! She made a couple location suggestions in New England and we chose what best fit us.

She has the most calming way about her but still came off as my hype woman after she was clicking away taking our photos. I felt so beautiful and comfortable with her and actually teared up when we said our goodbyes at the end of the night. She’s quite special and 1000% worth it! She let us be ourselves and just captured those moments.

If you’ve made it this far, hire Kat. You’ll never regret it!

Top 10 Places to Elope In Rhode Island

The Best Spots to Elope in RI

SWELL & STONE / Rhode Island Outdoor Wedding & Elopement Photographer

Rhode Island beach elopement at sunset at Beavertail Lighthouse on Jamestown.
Rhode Island elopement photographer captures Rhode Island beach wedding on Block Island.

Rhode Island is one of the premier places in the country for elopements. It is, after all, the Ocean State and has 400 miles of gorgeous coastline that includes cliffs, dunes, river rocks, and sandy open beaches. And while the coastline is a major attraction it also has beautiful forests, lakes, and rivers dotted with cute cabins if that’s more your style.

To be honest, my goal in life is to find a couple (or many!) who want to paddle to their own private island for their elopement. There are a ton of unoccupied islands in this state, just off the coast and in lakes and rivers. Many of them are simply a short paddle away. Have a boat? We can take that too! The point is, there are so many gorgeous spots open to exploration. So if you’re looking for seclusion and views, get in touch and let’s start planning your dream elopement. Want to spread your search a little broader? Here’s my New England elopement guide. Check out these articles if you’re looking for Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, or Upstate NY

When planning an elopement, especially one in the summer months, it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in Rhode Island.

Where to Elope in RI?

  1. Lighthouse(s) on Public Lands

From Beavertail to Point Judith to North Light on Block Island, these spots are honestly one of the most picturesque spots in the state, and a great spot to catch the sunset. Castle Hill is another option, but it is on private land and requires booking services with Castle Hill Inn. This is also close to Fort Adams State Park, which has incredible views of the Newport bridge, and is a great spot to visit any time of year. The rocky coastline in this area provides for a lot of exploration and scenery unique to Rhode Island, including tide pools. Check out this gallery.

  2. Wood River

The Wood River runs through the Arcadia Management Area, which is where a bulk of the scenic spots on the river can be found. One of the coolest spots is just north of Alton Pond. In the summer there are copious blueberry and raspberry bushes and calm, beautiful waters. There are several AirBnB’s couples can rent along the river, and there are rope swings and docks dotted along the shoreline. The river is cocooned in a canopy of big trees, which opens into marches and lakes in the wider spots. So if you want to elope summer camp style, this is a great option.

  3. Moonstone Beach

This beach, located right next to Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, can be tough to visit in the summer due to seasonal parking restrictions and to protect the breeding environment of piping plovers. However, if you can time it right this is one of the most beautiful beaches to elope on, and it is secluded due to the lack of parking and all the restrictions. If you’d like to know more about eloping here, reach out and I can help you plan it to take advantage of the best time of year and the best time of day for light.

  4. Napatree Point Conservation Area

This point is one of the coolest places in the entire state. It’s a strip of land that juts out far into the Block Island Sound. It’s so narrow, you can walk back and forth from one side to the other, and there are incredible sand dunes and seagrasses that make for stunning photos. The point is long enough to find a little privacy the further out you walk. Parking can be a pain in the summer, but planning on a weekday elopement can help curtail that issue.

  5. East Beach

This is a wide beach with surprisingly clear waters and little infrastructure. There is over 3 miles of straight, undeveloped beachfront, a rare sight anywhere these days. An added bonus is that you can drive your 4x4 vehicle onto the sand, bring your dog, and even ride your horse on the beach outside of peak summer hours, naturally. In order to drive your vehicle on the beach (including camping vehicles), a Barrier Beach pass is needed. Find more information on the registration and use of 4x4 vehicles on the beach here.

  6. Block Island

This spot is a favorite of Rhode Islanders and out-of-towners alike. From the incredible sunset views at North Light to the amazingly picturesque Mohegan Bluffs this island has all the makings of the perfect elopement adventure. There’s great food on the island, gorgeous accommodations, and taking the ferry over from the mainland is park of the fun! If you’re looking for a true island adventure elopement in Rhode Island, this is the spot for you! (NOTE: weekdays or planning very far in advance are a must for this spot. And secluded ceremony spots are even better before Memorial Day or after Labor Day). Check out this gallery.

  7. Brenton Point State Park

This park is in Newport, RI and perfectly situated to enjoy the sunset, and there are some more secluded spots tucked deep into the trails here. During the summer this becomes the premiere spot for kites of all shapes and sizes, so it’s windy, but all the kites add an aura of free-spirited ambiance. This also has 180-degree views of the water, and it’s located close to a few other spots on this list, so you could make a whole or half-day out of visiting several while fitting a ceremony in at your favorite spot.

  8. Conimicut Point Park

This park has a sand bar that extends into the Narragansett Bay at various distances depending on the tide. It’s close to Providence, so it makes for a nice half-day elopement and lovely views close to the city. There’s even a tiny chapel by the sea right next to the beach if you are looking to have a religious ceremony.

  9. Second Beach (Sachuest Beach)

While one of the most well-known beaches in the state located in Middletown, RI there is plenty of space to roam here. It is protected by sand dunes and sea grasses and it is right next to Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, with Third Beach on the other side. This area has so many options for incredible photos that it is hard to beat. If magical beach walks are the stuff your elopement dreams are made of, this spot might be the one for you. Check out this gallery.

  10. South shore Beach

This beach backs up to a delightfully undeveloped piece of land that has two ponds on it. There also aren’t a bunch of mansions overlooking the water here, which makes the view nicer in my opinion. There are dirt roads to gorgeous overlooks, and lots of cool tucked aways spots that don’t see a lot of tourists. This area is just a little “out of the way” in the best possible way.

    Bonus- Lincoln Woods State Park

Lincoln Woods is a state park just outside of Providence, Rhode Island. It has a gorgeous lake, with islands you can paddle to in the middle for your own private ceremony. There are also rocky cliffs and lush forests with a ton of trails and nice scenic spots. Check out this gallery.

Whether you’re from Rhode Island, New England, or somewhere else, Rhode Island is an incredible place to elope or have a small outdoor wedding. From epic rocky coastlines to lush forests and rivers, there are a lot of options to host the perfect outdoor elopement getaway. So if hiking down a wide-open beach, walking through sand dunes, or paddling to a private island sound like your idea of a great elopement day, get in touch. I don’t just take small outdoor wedding and elopement photos. I help you plan your perfect, adventurous day from beginning to end.

TRAVELING TO RHODE ISLAND

The Ocean State is a little convoluted when it comes to traveling around the state. The Narragansett Bay runs right up the middle, so although it’s a small state that should take less than an hour to drive across, it often takes longer due to needing to get on one of the many bridges. However, the bridges are one of the things that make this state so cool! I love shooting elopements at Fort Adams State Park because you can have a view of the iconic Newport Bridge in your ceremony. The 95 runs north to south making travel that direction easy, but you’ll want to venture off of it for the best views in the state.

WHERE TO STAY IN RHODE ISLAND

I always recommend checking VRBO when looking for places to stay and planning your elopement. Why do I recommend VRBO over Airbnb? Because Airbnb no longer allows any type of event to take place. If it’s just the two of you that’s not a problem, but if you want to have any friends or family over and just enjoy a simple dinner celebration together VRBO allows that. In fact, there’s a box that you can check labeled “events allowed” and VRBO only shows you places where you are allowed to host a few people for a dinner celebration. Again, Airbnb is a great option if you don’t plan to use it for a celebration. I especially like their unique stays which feature super cool places, like treehouses. Who doesn’t want to elope and stay in a treehouse? I know I do!

HOW DO YOU LEGALLY GET MARRIED IN RHODE ISLAND?

If both people live in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license at the city or town hall where either person lives. If only one person lives in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license from the city or town hall where the Rhode Islander lives. If neither person lives in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license from the clerk's office in the city or town where the marriage ceremony will be performed.

Both people must provide a valid photo identification and a certified birth certificate. Check with the clerk’s office  in the city or town hall where you will apply for a marriage license for any requirements about approved forms of identification, proof of birth, or proof of address. If either person was married or in a legal relationship before, the applicant(s) must provide a certified final divorce decree/dissolution or a certified death certificate for the former spouse. A legal relationship includes marriage, civil union, common law marriage, or registered domestic partnership. A certified copy of a vital record must have a raised State seal on it.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET MARRIED IN RHODE ISLAND?

To obtain a marriage license, both parties must apply for the license in person at the city or town clerk’s office. The couple is required to complete the marriage worksheet and provide the required documentation. The clerk will then create the marriage license from the information provided. Both parties are required to sign both the worksheet and the marriage license in the presence of the city or town clerk. The fee for the marriage license is currently $24.00 payable to the city or town.

Best Places for A Vermont Elopement

How to Plan Your Vermont Elopement

Eloping can spare a lot of the stress and anxiety that comes with planning a traditional wedding. With your partner by your side, the life-changing moment is sure to be a lot less overwhelming. Planning an elopement also offers a lot of benefits for people who are looking for an intimate, less costly ceremony. This article will explore some of your options, what to expect, and the best locations to elope in Vermont.

Vermont has so many stunning landscapes from waterfalls to mountain ranges and is considered one of the best places in the Northeast region and the country for elopements. Those looking for an adventure wedding experience should look no further than Vermont. The autumn in particular offers some of the best views in the entire world during fall foliage season.

Want to spread your search a little broader? Here’s my New England elopement guide. Check out these articles if you’re looking for Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, or Upstate NY. Or check out galleries from Vermont elopements here: A.J. & David, Sara & Joe, Anna & Sean, Lucie & Michael, Brittany & Wayne, Holly & Louis, Alexis & Nick, Rachel & Ryan, Kelsey & Kirsten.

There are a lot of reasons why people elope. Some people want to get married without their families present, some want to avoid the stress of planning a big wedding, and some just want the ceremony to be small and intimate. Whatever your reason for eloping, there are plenty of beautiful places in Vermont that are perfect for an intimate ceremony. You can also find a range of affordable options on Airbnb or VRBO if you’re looking for an alternative to hotels or bed-and-breakfasts.

Known as the Green Mountain State, Vermont is the 14th wonder of the natural world. Ok, that’s not true, but what is true is that it is home to more than 100 19th-century covered wooden bridges and it’s a major producer of maple syrup with “sugar houses” all over the state. It boasts thousands of acres of mountain terrain which are crossed by hiking trails and skiing slopes. It’s charming and cozy, and from enchanting forests that hide incredibly beautiful waterfalls to the mountain peaks, there is something everyone will love.

Mt. Mansfield State Park is home to the tallest mountain and only one of two spots where you can get above treeline in the state. Nearby Camel’s Hump is the other. Lake Champlain is a huge lake that has private islands, a ferry across to New York, and incredible sunset views. Go north to Lake Willoughby and find an incredibly clear and beautiful lake with mountains rising straight up out of the sides.

When planning an elopement it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in VT.

Where to Elope in Vermont

Mt. Mansfield

The tallest mountain in the Green Mountain State is Mt. Mansfield, and there are a multitude of ways to get up this mountain. From May to early October, you can take the Auto Toll Road which costs $22 per private vehicle and an additional $9 per passenger. Their hours are 9am - 4pm and it open generally from Memorial Day to the second weekend in October. This road takes you to the Visitors Center near the top of the mountain, however, it’s still another 1.2 mile hike to reach the summit. And don’t be mistaken there are somewhat sheer faces, and temps can be in the 40’s and 50’s on the summit even when it’s a warm summer day at the base. You can also choose to take the gondola which is a shorter but steeper hike to the summit via the precarious cliff trail. Taking the Gondola Skyride costs adults (age 13+) $30, and children (age 5-12) $20, the Family Pack (2 adults, 2 children) is $85. This is also open generally from Memorial Day to the second weekend in Oct, however, it’s also open in the winter during ski season. The cliff trail is too dangerous to ascend in the winter, but you can walk around the top. Gondola hours are 10 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.

Of course, then there are hiking trails to the top. They range from 3 miles roundtrip (going straight up) to around 8 miles round trip. These are open all year except for mud season which generally lasts from April to late May when snow is melting rapidly and causing the trails to become basically waterfalls. Check out this gallery, and this one, and this one.

Various Waterfalls

There are so many amazing waterfalls in Vermont and they are one of my favorite spots to take people to who have never been to Vermont before. When they see the clear and pristine waters flowing over the granite rock they can hardly believe it’s real. The water is a deep blue-green and it really does seem like something only seen in movies. Several are super popular swimming holes, so in the summer especially I highly recommend a sunrise ceremony. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a bunch of eager swimmers waiting to jump in the water during your ceremony. There are a few with only a short hike to the falls, making them great spots if you are eloping with some family that can’t walk far. Check out this gallery.

Stowe

Stowe has so many great hikes and options for ceremony spots with views. This is a favorite spot for winter elopers too because of the ski resort on Mt. Mansfield. The town itself is extremely charming, and there are a ton of great options for places to stay. There are short and easy waterfall hikes nearby, you can ride the gondola, or you can do a more strenuous hike and find a little more seclusion here too. Check out this gallery.

Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is a huge freshwater lake that runs the length of the top third of Vermont all the way to Canada. It lies on the eastern border of Vermont and on the western border of upstate New York. From the Vermont side you can see the Adirondacks in New York, and from the New York side, you can see the Green Mountains and Mt. Mansfield. There is a ferry across that is super fun to take if you are looking for a more interesting way to go from one side of the lake to the other. It’s around $10.75 for the driver and car, and then an additional $4.50 for passengers after that. The lake has numerous lake houses, VRBO’s, Airbnb’s, and resorts along the shoreline, along with some conserved lands for public access. It’s a great place for eloping couples to rent a place to stay and come back after an exciting and incredible elopement day to watch the sunset over the mountains and the lake. Check out this gallery.

Lake Willoughby

Willoughby is a glacial lake over 320 feet deep in places second to only Lake Champlain whose deepest point reaches 400 feet. Lake Willoughby resembles a Norwegian fjord. There are a variety of hikes near the lake that allow for an elevated view of the lake and make for great ceremony spots. The water is beautiful and clear and this is also a great spot to canoe, paddleboard, or go boating.

Camel’s Hump

Hiking Camel’s Hump is a fairly strenuous 6-mile round trip hike, but the views from the top make it all worthwhile. Beautiful seemingly endless mountain layers stretch on for what feels like forever. Along with the nice views you get a challenge as well in terms of the hike. This won’t be ideal for everyone, but for those who want to experience the views and leave some of the crowds behind this might fit the bill.

Texas Falls Recreation Area

This is a gorgeous…gorge, haha. There is plenty of hiking to do here, and great views of the gorge, plus spectacular mossy trails in an old-growth forest. It’s a dreamy spot for those looking for quick and easy access to an intimate and beautiful area. Check out this gallery.

Smugglers Notch State Park

There are a ton of beautiful hikes in Smuggler Notch State Park near the Stowe area. One trail, in particular, leads to an incredible pond flanked by mountains on all sides. From here you can continue on and summit an awesome peak, which also has great views. It’s only a 2.3 round trip hike so there is a lot of beauty for relatively little exertion.

Emerald Lake State Park

Another state park with gorgeous views and crystal clear waters, but this one is actually in southern Vermont. This park is a favorite for outdoor recreation in the summer, but it’s just as pretty in the spring and the fall. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent right on the beach, and there are great hiking trails around the edge of the lake making finding a secluded ceremony spot a little easier. Check out this gallery.

Haystack Mountain

A mountain in southern Vermont, the summit of Haystack Mountain has views of Haystack Pond down below, along with incredible views of the rest of the mountain range. It’s not an easy hike, but there is only about 1000 feet of elevation gain over the 2.5 miles up, making it not all that steep and therefore doable in a wedding dress. A lot of people also snowshoe this one in the winter.

Brousseau Mountain

This mountain falls in the far north of the state of Vermont. It’s a short hike to incredible views and it’s very lightly trafficked, making it an ideal spot for a more secluded elopement experience.

How Do You Legally Get Married in Vermont?

The requirements for getting married in Vermont are simple - you just need to be 18 years old, have a valid photo ID and know where the wedding will take place. There are no residency requirements for getting married in Vermont.

You do not need witnesses to get married in Vermont.

How Much Does it Cost to Get Married in Vermont?

The average cost of wedding venues in Vermont is $3,000 to $5,000, and the average cost of a full, traditional wedding is around $35,000. But if you choose to get married by eloping in the great outdoors that cost can go down significantly. Check out an elopement cost calculator here. Eloping couples choose to pay for what they care about and forget the rest. For some couples, creating an adventurous experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives is more important than paying for a party for a large number of friends and family, most of whom they don’t see that often. Eloping couples often choose to spend more on the experience and the process of documenting their day, than the guests involved.

Whether you’re from Vermont, New England, or anywhere else in the country or world, VT is an incredible place to elope or have a small outdoor wedding. From epic mountain destinations to lush forests, lakes, and rivers, there are a lot of options to host the perfect outdoor elopement getaway. So if hiking to a stunning waterfall, summiting mountains, or paddling a lake or river sounds like your idea of a great elopement day, get in touch. I don’t just take small outdoor wedding and elopement photos. I help you plan your perfect, adventurous day from beginning to end.

Maybe you’ve already decided a traditional wedding is not your thing, but a New Hampshire elopement might be the perfect fit for your lifestyle. Check out these articles if you’re looking for Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, or Upstate NY. Also, check out these galleries for real couples who eloped in New Hampshire- Maddy & Chris, Julia & Jeff, Alexis & Christian, Gwen & Dan.

New Hampshire is known as the Granite State, and for good reason, because New Hampshire is home to the White Mountains and Mt. Washington, the region’s highest peak. Outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country and the world flock to the White Mountains to hike, ski, explore, and recreate. New Hampshire is defined by its quaint towns and large expanses of wilderness, and you can enjoy all the charm that New England has to offer paired with vast opportunities for outdoor adventure and fun.

Mt. Washington State Park is home to the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi. Lake Winnipesaukee is a huge lake that has private islands and incredible sunrise and sunset views, depending on the side you choose to explore. Go north to Dixville Notch and find an extremely steep and wild landscape that is a little more secluded, or take a drive down the world-renowned Kancamagus Highway, which boasts some of the best views on the entire east coast.

When planning an elopement it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in NH.

Where to Elope In NH

Cathedral Ledge

The spot is a favorite for those eloping with family or friends who can’t hike far. It’s an incredibly beautiful location that provides beautiful views of Echo Lake State Park below, as well as mountains in the distance. There is a road to the top and a small parking area, making the walk to the wedding location very short. However, because there is a road, it obviously attracts more crowds, and a permit is required in this location. Check out this gallery to see an actual elopement here.

Franconia Notch State Park

Franconia Notch State Park is an enchanting wonderland of beautiful elopement locations. The mountains rise up out of the lake and river valley here and the forests are just as incredible as the mountain tops. There are a ton of gorge-like features that have crystal clear water rushing over them. The first time I ever visited here I think I was left with my jaw on the ground. I couldn’t believe there were so many beautiful places packed into one small area. This area has so much to do and see it is the dream location for an all-day elopement where you want to sample a little bit of every type of landscape.

There are a few lakes with stunning mountain backdrops in this area. During the summer months, there is a fee to enter, and it is usually crowded with swimmers, so I only recommend it early in the morning or later in the evening. In the off-season, it is the perfect spot to take a stroll and see the lake in its full glory. There are also a few gorgeous and quick hikes leading to stunning overlooks of a lake and the mountains surrounding it. Also, right in this area is access to Cannon Mountain and its gondola which boasts incredible views and a lot of fun as an elopement day activity. Check out this gallery.

Pinkham Notch

Pinkham Notch is a mountain pass just south of the Mt. Washington area. It’s a favorite spot for backcountry skiers, hikers, and ice climbers. Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) runs a visitors center here, and it’s very close to Wildcat Mountain, the resort that is frequently cited as having the best views in New England. They have a gondola that you can take to the top as part of your elopement day, but the surrounding area has plenty to keep you occupied as well. There is a huge variety of hikes within a short distance. In fact, you don’t have to hike far at all to find lovely views here, but you also can hike a long way if you desire.

Mt. Washington

Mt. Washington State Park is home to Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. The great thing about Mt. Washington is that (during the summer months) it offers all the adventure without all the strenuous hiking. There is a road to the top, and there is also the famous and unique Cog Railway. There are options to take a biodiesel or steam train. The train is only at the summit for an hour, so if you’d like longer than that to explore the top, like having a ceremony at Lake of the Clouds, for instance, I would recommend taking the train up and then having family drive up the Auto Road. Auto Road rates are $35 for car and driver, plus $10 for additional adults. The Auto Road is open generally from early to late May depending on conditions to the early to late October, also depending on conditions. The Cog Railway is open all year but doesn’t run some days due to weather, and the winter summit is only partway up the mountain. Still a fun experience on a chilly elopement day.

Of course, you can hike as well. It is about 8 miles round trip with over 4,000 feet of elevation gain. That’s over 1000 feet of elevation gain per mile, which tends to be a steep grade. Check out this gallery.

Kancamagus Highway

The Kancamagus Highway, also known as New Hampshire Route 112 is a 56.39-mile-long east-west state highway in northern New Hampshire. It’s a designated scenic byway that takes you through a path cut through the White Mountain National Forest with breathtaking views of the White Mountains, the Swift River, Sabbaday Falls, Lower Falls, and Rocky Gorge. With so many places to stop and hike and see the sights, this makes for an ideal journey on your elopement day. The road goes through an old-growth forest that is not littered with resorts, houses, or other buildings. In fact, it’s not built up at all, it’s just pure nature at its best. Check out this gallery. Check out this gallery.

Lake Winnipesaukee area

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire and located in the Lakes Region at the foothills of the White Mountains. One of my favorite hikes is in this area, and it’s a short and fairly easy one for eloping couples! The views from the surrounding mountains of the lake below are unstoppable, but then add that to exploring the lake itself! It’s a great place to find a secluded island, take a boat trip, rent a canoe, or practice your stand-up paddleboarding. There are so many options for activities during your elopement day that you’ll be left wondering how you can fit it all in.

Crawford Notch State Park

Crawford Notch State Park has 5,775 acres and has access to numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, fishing, wildlife viewing, and unreal mountain views. Just driving through this area you will be amazed by waterfalls falling off the face of mountains and beautiful swimming holes along the side of the road. Add that into the hiking trails and stunning views and it’s a perfect combination for people planning an active elopement. Start with one of my favorite incredible view hikes at sunrise, and end your elopement by jumping into a waterfall or mountain lake!

Dixville Notch State Park

This one is a little further off the beaten path in the far north part of the state of NH. And honestly, I would only recommend this spot to people who are not afraid of heights. This is an incredible area that has mountain lakes, waterfalls, gorgeous mountain views, and some extreme cliffs. The bonus of this spot is that with the exception of the cliff ledge itself, there is virtually no one else on the trails. I have a few additional recommendations for this area that can really help you have the elopement of your dreams. Check out this gallery.

Mt. Chocorua

How could I skip this beautiful mountain and its lovely mountain lake. In fact, it is New England's most photographed mountain. The hike to the top is strenuous, but you are awarded with 360 views at the top. So whether you choose to explore the lake and the base of the mountain (including trails to waterfalls) or go up to the summit, there are incredible views to be found.

You must be 18 years old or older, you must have a valid photo ID with your current address on it, you must have a valid marriage license from the state where you live or where the marriage will take place, and it must be signed by a judge or clerk of court. And finally, if you are divorced, you need to show proof that your divorce is final and that there is no chance of reconciliation with your spouse (e.g., death certificate). Cost of Eloping in NH?

Eloping is a great way to save money on your wedding. It also means that you don't have to worry about the stress of planning a big event. But how much does it cost to elope in New Hampshire?

The cost of eloping in New Hampshire varies depending on the type of ceremony you want and where you want it. For example, if you want a small ceremony at home, then the cost will be less than if you wanted an elaborate ceremony at a hotel.

The average cost of wedding venues in New Hampshire is around $5,000, and the average cost of a full, traditional wedding is around $35,000. But if you choose to get married by eloping in the great outdoors that cost can go down significantly. Check out an elopement cost calculator here. Eloping couples choose to pay for the things that are important to them. For some couples, that is having great photos and having the time of their lives that they will remember forever. Those things are more important than paying for a party for a large number of friends and family, most of whom they don’t see that often. Eloping couples often choose to spend more on the experience and the process of documenting their day than the guests involved.

Couple elopes at Garnet Hill Lodge in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. Upstate NY elopement packages.

Upstate, New York | Finger Lakes, The Adirondacks, and The Catskills

The first time I set foot in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York I fell in love. This place is honestly a complete fairytale wonderland with magical waterfalls cascading off of cliffs, and old stone pathways that lead to unbelievably beautiful gorges carved out of the ancient rock. I’m DYING to shoot an elopement here, and there are so many incredible locations to choose from. When I show images of this place to most people they say it looks like another country, that it can’t possibly be in the United States. Most think it looks like Scotland or Ireland, and to be honest, it kind of does. So if you’re looking for a magical fairytale elopement in a place that looks like another country, you should choose the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. It is absolutely out of this world. There are also several gorgeous small wedding venues in this area that allow for easy access to many of the incredible views with just a short drive. Follow this to see my whole New York elopement guide. Check out this gallery and this gallery.

I have to say that upstate New York has left me in awe more than a few times since I first started exploring it nearly 12 years ago. Each time I go back I find a waterfall or seven that leave more in love than the last time. A couple of summers ago I planned a mid-week trip to the Catskills for my husband and me, and we found ourselves just not leaving when we were supposed to. On the drive home, we found several more state parks and waterfalls to trail run around before driving back in the pitch black of night. I can’t express how much I love this place. The Catskills are so close to New York City couples wanting to elope, but not wanting to go far. There are so many gorgeous spots in this area, but Kaaterskill Falls and the Peakamoose area really stand out. Those spots have become so popular that they are now overcrowded in the summer. I highly recommend planning your elopement in an offseason and on a weekday to fully take advantage of the area at it’s finest.

Rhode Island Coastline

Another location that hits close to home is the rocky and breathtaking coastline of Rhode Island, which happens to be where I live. Eloping in Rhode Island is a favorite for beach lovers as the state has 400 miles of incredible coastline. That’s a lot of beauty for such a small state! The state also has some wild and beautiful undeveloped coast, which seems strange in such a populated place. Check out this article for more info about the best places to elope in Rhode Island. There are amazing rocky shores, there are sandy beaches, and because a lot of the beaches are south facing there are incredible locations for both sunrise or sunset ceremonies, a rarity on the east coast. The state boasts tiny private islands within paddling or boating distance, so finding seclusion is never a problem. Want a romantic lighthouse in the background? This is the state for you, there are several stunning lighthouses to choose from. Rhode Island is a great option for Boston couples looking to elope in an outstanding beach location not too far from home. Check out the gallery here, here, here, here, and here.

Couple elopes on Cathedral Ledge in New Hampshire during their small outdoor wedding in the fall.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains are probably what most people think of when they think of an epic adventure location in New England. This mountain range is home to Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet. The mountain range covers part of New Hampshire and into Maine. There are beautiful waterfalls, gorgeous mountain lakes, and the largest amount of terrain over the tree line in New England. Couples wanting to elope in the White Mountains will find that there are both short and long hikes to incredible views, and there is truly something for every kind of adventurer. I love this area in the winter, the temps and weather can be extreme, but also extremely peaceful. Hiking through quiet snow-covered forests to desolate and icy peaks is one of my favorite things, but admittedly difficult to do on a wedding day when brides hope to be wearing dresses and not 17 layers of down jackets. Something I love to suggest to couples if they love this landscape as well is to consider taking a gondola to the top of the mountain and doing a short hike to great views. That way you can still be relatively warm while getting epic views in a great location. Also, have a look at my New Hampshire Elopement Guide, filled with the best places to elope in New Hampshire. Couple look at the view from the summit of Mt. Mansfield during their late fall elopement. Vermont elopement photographer.

Stowe and Burlington, Vermont

I’ve said this to so many couples at this point, and I stand by this as truth- there is no better place to elope than Vermont in the fall. Sure, the western United States has grand and epic vistas, but no place on earth has a better fall season than the northeast. There are endless mountain views and rolling hills absolutely covered in leafy trees turning shades of red, orange, yellow, and even purple. The small towns dotted all over Vermont and much of New England are enchanting and idyllic, and it is truly one of the most picturesque places in the country. I love when couples decide to say their vows along a misty riverside or on top of the highest peak in Vermont, Mt. Mansfield. One of the coolest things about Vermont in the fall is that the mornings are almost always foggy, but if it’s going to be a sunny day the sun will burn off the top layer, leaving unreal low-lying fog in the valleys. For a photographer, it’s an absolute dream come true if you can convince your couple to be up at sunrise to take advantage of the stellar views. It is super fortunate that the tallest mountain in the state has both an Auto Toll road and a gondola as options for reaching the summit. There is still a small hike after each of these, but it’s worth it for the 360 views. Make sure you check out my Vermont Elopement Guide, which has a list of the best places to elope in Vermont. Check out this gallery, and this one too.

Couple hike the iron rung trail “the beehive” in Acadia National Park for their Maine elopement.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park, where the mountains meet the coast. This is such a unique and gorgeous landscape and a favorite of many New Englanders. Grab a couple of lobster rolls and go for a hike to a spot with a beautiful view, say your vows, make a grand toast, and enjoy your picnic. Or pick a spot along the coast that is an easy walk for friends and family who may be attending, and then lead a hike after the ceremony but before the celebration dinner. There are so many ways to make your elopement day stand out, and a backdrop like Acadia National Park is one of them. Check out this gallery, and this one.

The Catskills, New York

I have to say that upstate New York has left me in awe more than a few times since I first started exploring it nearly 12 years ago. Couple hug in front of Bash Bish Falls in the Berkshires, Massachusetts. Massachusetts adventure elopement photographer.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

These mesmerizing rolling hill mountains will leave you wanting to return over and over again. One of my favorite spots within the Berkshires is a little place called Bash Bish Falls. The first time I visited this place my husband and I both noted how it felt like Oregon. There is a wide gentle path down to the falls, and when we turned the corner to head down I was blown away by what I saw in front of me- a 59’ waterfall gushing with crystal clear waters into a beautiful pool and running through a forest of tall, lush trees. Like so many of the areas on this list, there are a million amazing secret spot locations, but you just have to know what you’re looking for. Hiring a photographer for your elopement who knows the area in and out is key to planning the elopement day of your dreams and coming away with photos that will stand the test of time. Check out this guide for my favorite spots for couple looking to elope all over Massachusetts.

Cape Cod, MA elopement

Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts

The giant sand dunes and seagrasses of Cape Cod make for a stunning backdrop for any elopement. Standing high above the ocean you can see for miles and miles. Taking a boat ride out to Martha’s Vineyard or another of the surrounding islands makes for a great pre or post-wedding activity. This landscape is so large, you just have to walk long enough and you can manage to lose the crowds. The little towns on the peninsula are idyllic and wonderful spots for some friends and family to explore in the days surrounding the wedding if you plan to include them in your elopement.

I hope I provided some insight into how incredible it can be to elope in New England and the Northeast region of the United States. If you’d love a photographer who helps plan your location and elopement, including recommending other vendors get in touch with me today, and let’s start planning your dream wedding day! How to Plan Your Massachusetts Elopement

So you’re engaged and now you’re looking for the best places to elope in Massachusetts. Luckily, Massachusetts is one of the leading places in the country for elopements and I offer a variety of Massachusetts elopement packages. From its incredible east coast dotted with islands and beautiful beaches to its mountainous western slope that boasts great views and plenty of forest land. Make sure to reach out if you’re looking for MA elopement packages. Couples can plan a spectacular beach getaway or a remote forested mountain elopement. Regardless of your style, there is an incredible landscape to match your vision in Massachusetts. Want to spread your search a little broader? Here’s my New England elopement guide. Check out these articles if you’re looking for Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, or Upstate NY.

Because of the varied landscape, the first thing you’ll need to decide is what type of view you’re looking for on your elopement day. If you’re into waterfalls, rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests, stick to the western part of the state. And if you’re looking for beaches, sand dunes, seagrasses, lighthouses, and islands, you’ll find those on the eastern side. Maybe proximity to family is important as well. Keep all of these things in mind, but remember that Massachusetts is a relatively small state in terms of driving distances, and you can drive across the whole area in about 3.5 hours.

So if you’re looking for seclusion and views, like renting your own private, active lighthouse for the night, or having a stunning sunset view after a mountaintop ceremony, get in touch and let’s start planning your dream elopement.

When planning an elopement, especially one in the summer months, it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. This list is ever-changing as I photograph and find more hidden gems in MA. So buckle up and enjoy, and feel free to reach out with suggestions of your favorite places as well! Without further ado, here are some of the best spots to elope in MA.

Where to Elope in MA?

Cape Ann Peninsula

One of my friends grew up here and several years ago my then-boyfriend, now husband and I attended her wedding here. We were blown away by the crystal clear waters, I mean, really shockingly clear, and the lighthouse views, sandbars, and quintessentially quaint towns certainly didn’t hurt. There is a lot of private property on the peninsula, so I usually recommend that couples either rent an Airbnb with a great view and they can hold the ceremony there. However, if you are from here or know people from the area it is much easier to get access to some incredible sites for wedding ceremonies. Beyond that, it’s great to explore the beaches’ incredible views for photos after the ceremony.

Borden Flats Lighthouse

Ok, someone please hire me to shoot part of your elopement at Borden Flats Lighthouse ASAP! I say part of your elopement because it is an active lighthouse in the middle of the bay, so once you get out there for the evening, there’s not much to do but take in the view. Obviously, the photos would be phenomenal, but I would recommend spending part of your day exploring the mainland and then jumping on the private boat that takes you out to this beautiful spot at 5 pm, which is check-in time. You can host a little celebration with a few guests on the lighthouse and then the sunset photos would be incredible as you’re surrounded by 360 degrees of water! The guests and I can hop back on the private boat, as only two people are allowed to stay the night as honorary guest lighthouse keepers. What an incredible and unique wedding experience. But this place books up fast, and you need to plan up to a year in advance to make sure you secure your stay here.

The Berkshires

This is a large area, but I couldn’t just choose one spot, and I’m always finding new ones, so I’m including the general region here, which encompasses the westernmost portion of the state. The rolling forested mountains here make up the predominant views, and I always think of low lying fog when I think about the area as well. it has a sort of magical, mystical, ethereal nature to it. Some of the best spots here are Bish Bash Falls and Jiminy Peak, which are both detailed further below.

Bash Bish Falls

At 80 feet, this is the tallest single-drop waterfall in the state. Bash Bish can be found right on the border of Massachusetts and New York. It is part of a larger State Park area that joins Taconic State Park in New York and Bash Bish Falls State Park in MA. The trail is about 2 miles round trip from the MA side, and it’s wide and relatively flat most of the way through a gorgeous old-growth forest. There are a number of gorgeous spots to stop and take in the river scenery along the way. This is a crowded area in the summer and I highly recommend choosing a weekday or the offseason if you decide to elope here.

Nantucket

This island holds hands down one of the coolest spots in the state for elopements, Great Point Light. It’s on a nature preserve, it’s secluded, and spectacularly beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset. And the cool part is that it has great views in every direction. This area has sand road access, and if you’re not comfortable driving your car out there it’s a bit of a hike. It’s an adventure for sure, and one with super rewarding views and some solitude. Not to mention the rest of the island, which is really a perfectly idyllic place. First, start by taking the ferry over from the mainland, stay at one of the many spectacular properties, preferably with a view, and make sure to eat your way through town as well.

Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard is a little bit more built up and crowded than Nantucket, partly because it’s only 7 miles from shore and Nantucket is 30, but it’s also the bigger island of the two. There is less in the way of public lands for wedding ceremonies, but there are plenty of places to rent for the occasion. The island also has interesting topography and some cliffs and rolling hills. In fact, the Aquinnah Cliffs on the west side of the island are a spectacular spot for photos, and there is also a picturesque lighthouse there. Access is a bit easier to Martha’s Vineyard as it is only a 35-minute ride over on the ferry. Check out this gallery.

Cape Cod National Seashore

The first time I visited this place I was absolutely in awe of the GIANT sand dunes, the vast coastal views, and the barreling waves. I had never seen a place quite like it. Here’s the thing about Cape Cod National Seashore, it can get Busy with a capital “B” during the summer season. But if you’re willing to walk through the sand and the dunes for a while, you can always find a little seclusion. Most people stay close to the parking lots and facilities, so if you have a bit of an adventurous side, you can hike to the ceremony spot. If you have older guests joining for the day, eloping on the public lands in this area becomes a bit more difficult, and I would recommend one of the great small wedding venues in the area that boast incredible views and easy to access facilities for older guests. But if it’s just of the two of you and you’re willing to walk a little, there are some awesome secluded spots in this area. Check out this gallery.

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort

This is more a small outdoor wedding location than an elopement, but I thought I’d add a couple of these in to mix it up. Jiminy Peak offers the option to hold your ceremony at the summit of the mountain by taking the chairlift to the top. How cool is that?! If you have some guests that are less than excited to ride the chair lift you can opt for the Brookside ceremony location under the canopy of trees and near a babbling brook. There are also options for reception spots. The Clark Room accommodates up to 40 guests and is a great indoor/outdoor space with a deck that has views of the slopes.

Bascom Lodge, Mount Greylock

Bascom Lodge is an awesome place to hold a small outdoor wedding if you’d like to invite some friends and family who may not be up for a hike but still love the mountains. There are beautiful views on the grounds, and they have a gorgeous enclosed porch that works as a lovely dining area. They only allow up to 50 guests, so it’s a dream location for a couple who wants the stunning views and a detailed and lovely space for an intimate reception all in one place.

How Do You Get Legally Married in Massachusetts?

To get married in Massachusetts you will need to be at least 18 years old. You will need to fill out the marriage license, which can be done in person or by mail. After your application is processed, you will receive a marriage license. You can then have your ceremony within 180 days from the date

One of the requirements for marriage in MA is the presence of at least two people who serve as witnesses to the ceremony.

What is the Cost to Elope in MA?

The average cost of wedding venues in Massachusetts is $3,000 to $5,000, and the average cost of a full, traditional wedding is around $35,000.

Whether you’re from Massachusetts, New England, or somewhere else, MA is an incredible place to elope or have a small outdoor wedding. From epic island destinations to lush forests, lakes, and rivers, there are a lot of options to host the perfect outdoor elopement getaway. So if hiking down a wide-open beach, walking through sand dunes, or paddling to an island sound like your idea of a great elopement day, get in touch. I don’t just take a small outdoor wedding and elopement photos. I help you plan your perfect, adventurous day from beginning to end.

Common Questions About Eloping

Now that we’ve told you our favorite place to elope, let's answer some common questions about eloping.

What is eloping?

Eloping simply means getting married without all the fuss of a traditional wedding. This can mean anything from eloping to City Hall to eloping at a beautiful location with just a few close family and friends present. The important thing is that you're focused on each other, not on putting on a big show for everyone else.

Why elope?

There are plenty of reasons why couples choose to elope. For some, it's a way to save money and avoid the stress of planning a big wedding. Others want to keep things simple and intimate, or they might elope to a destination that's meaningful to them. Whatever your reasons, eloping can be a great way to focus on what's truly important-each other.

Benefits of Choosing to Elope

As we mentioned, one of the big benefits of eloping is that it can save you a lot of money. Traditional weddings can cost tens of thousands of dollars, but eloping can be done for a fraction of that. And since you're not spending money on things like catering, and a reception hall, you can elope to a more luxurious location, an incredible photographer who will document the day like it deserves, or put that money towards your honeymoon instead.

Eloping is also much more convenient than planning a traditional wedding. There's no need to worry about coordinating all the details with a ton of vendors and guests. It doesn't have to be just the two of you! A lot of people choose to have immediate family or a few friends joy in on the fun.

If it is just the two of you, you can elope on pretty much any date and time that works for you-no need to wait for everyone else to be available.

Finally, eloping gives you the freedom to personalize your wedding exactly how you want. Whether you want to get married in your backyard or elope to a far-flung destination, the sky's the limit when you're eloping. You can even write your own vows, choose your own music, and wear whatever you want-it's all up to you!

So now that we've answered some of the most common questions about eloping, let's take a look at some of our favorite places to elope on the east coast.

What is Eloping

Eloping is an exciting and adventurous way to say your vows. At its core, eloping is a romantic gesture that allows two people to make a lifelong commitment in a meaningful, personal way.

Whether you choose to elope by yourselves or with just a few close friends and family members, it's a special opportunity to celebrate your love on your own terms.

What's more, eloping can be an incredibly budget-friendly option, giving you the freedom to focus on all of the other aspects of planning your special day. So if you're looking for something different and memorable for your wedding day, why not consider eloping?

Whether it's rushing off to get hitched with only a couple weeks to plan or jetting off on an exotic destination wedding adventure, eloping is sure to create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

The Cost of Eloping

I actually have a great post that covers this in more detail and even includes a calculator. When it comes to getting married, there are many different ways that couples can choose to celebrate their big day. Some opt for an elaborate, traditional ceremony at a large wedding venue with all of their friends and family in attendance. Others may choose to elope, seeking a more intimate and adventurous experience for just the two of them. While many people assume that eloping is cheaper than having a big wedding, the cost of eloping can actually be surprisingly high.

In order to ensure that your elopement goes off without a hitch, you will need to factor in the cost of all of the various components that come into play. This might include travel and accommodations for yourself and your partner, professional photography or videography services, hair and makeup appointments, and any other miscellaneous items that you might want to include in your special day. Additionally, if you are planning on having any guests there with you, you will need to factor in food for at least one meal and anything else you might want to cover for them as well. Ultimately, while eloping can be a wonderful option for certain couples looking for an especially romantic experience, it just depends on what you want to include and like weddings can have a wide range of costs associated.

How to Elope

Eloping is a popular way to get married without all the fuss of a traditional wedding. But how do you go about eloping? Here are a few tips to help you plan the perfect elopement:

1. Choose your destination carefully

You'll want a place that has special meaning to you both, or is simply stunning and romantic.

2. Keep it simple

Eloping is all about stripping away the unnecessary details and focusing on what's truly important: your love for each other.

3. Be prepared

While spontaneous elopements can be incredibly romantic, it's still important to do your research and make sure all the necessary arrangements are in place (e.g., obtaining a marriage license).

4. Tell your closest friends and family members about your plans…or don’t!

People assume when they elope that they can’t have friends or family in attendence. That’s just not true anymore, but it can be if you want it to be. There is no “right way” to elope, so just do it your way and call it a day.

5. Most importantly, relax and enjoy every moment of your elopement

This is one of the most exciting days of your life, so savor every second.

Pros of Eloping

Eloping has become a popular option for couples who want to get married while creating an experience that they will remember forever. There are many Pros of Eloping, including the fact that it is often cheaper than a traditional wedding, and it can be a more intimate and personal experience. Many couples elope because they want to avoid the stress of planning a big wedding, and they also want to have the freedom to choose their own ceremony and vows. Eloping can also be a great way to add an element of adventure to your wedding day, and it can be a lot of fun! If you are considering eloping, here are some pros of eloping that you may want to keep in mind.

-Can be cheaper than a traditional wedding

-More intimate and personal experience

-Can be a great way to add an element of adventure to your wedding day

-Can be more fun than a traditional wedding

- You don’t have to say your vows in front of a large audience…or anyone at all except your partner

- If some family doesn’t approve of your union, you can just not invite them because who cares about their opinion anyway

Cons of Eloping

People often think of eloping as a romantic and adventurous way to get married. While that is true, there are also several potential downsides that should be taken into consideration. For one thing, eloping typically involves skipping over some of the formalities involved in the traditional wedding process. If that’s important to you, it’s something to keep in mind. Of course, you can just include the traditions you care about and forget about the ones you don’t.

Another drawback of eloping is that it often means forfeiting some of the associated rituals, such as bridal showers or bachelorette parties. This can mean missing out on important moments with friends and loved ones who may not be able to attend the ceremony itself.

Overall, while there are clearly some advantages to eloping, couples should carefully consider these potential drawbacks before deciding whether this type of spontaneous wedding is right for them.

Who can Elope

Who can elope? Who can't elope? If you've got the desire to escape to an undisclosed location with your one true love in order to get hitched without all the rigamarole, then you, my friend, can elope! There's no correct answer as to who can or cannot elope. You don't have to be young and in love - though that definitely helps - you could be renewing your vows after 50 years of blissful marriage. You also don't have to be running off together in order to escape judgment from disapproving parents or society - though again, that would add an extra layer of excitement to your adventure. The bottom line is that if you want to elope, then do it!

Eloping is often seen as a spontaneous act, carried out by two people who are madly in love and can't wait to tie the knot. While this may be the case for some couples, eloping is actually an option for any couple who wants to forego a traditional wedding. There are no set rules about who can elope, and couples of all ages, backgrounds, and relationship status can choose to elope. Whether you're planning a secret ceremony or simply want to avoid the hassle of planning a big wedding, eloping might be the right choice for you. So don't let anyone tell you that you can't elope - if it's what you truly want, go for it!

Reasons to Elope

Eloping is a simple and intimate way to marry, without all the fuss and stress that often comes with planning a traditional wedding. Here are four reasons why eloping might be the right choice for you:

1. You want to keep things simple. Eloping eliminates the need to plan a big event or invite a large number of guests. All you need is your officiant and (if the state requires) witnesses, which makes it a very intimate affair.

2. You want to save money. Traditional weddings can be extremely expensive, but eloping can be done on a shoestring budget. You can even get married for free at some locations, like city halls or parks.

3. You want to avoid family drama. If you have difficult family members who you don’t want to invite to your wedding, eloping allows you to avoid that drama altogether.

4. You want an adventure. If you’re looking for an exciting way to start your marriage, elope! This is your chance to do something unique and adventurous, like getting married at the top of a mountain or in another country entirely. Whether you’re eloping for practical reasons or simply because it sounds like fun, there are plenty of reasons to consider this option. But before you make any decisions, be sure to do your research and choose the right location for you.

Fairytale Elopement in Acadia National Park | Acadia Elopement Packages

Ankeeta & Jacob Elope in Acadia National Park

SWELL & STONE / ADVENTURE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER / MAINE & BEYOND

A magical fairytale is the best way to describe Ankeeta and Jacob’s Acadia National Park elopement. They met at a strategically positioned overlook before the sun even rose from their first look. The moon was setting in the background and they were both really excited to see one another and begin their incredible elopement day. After their first look, they hiked with family and their pups to their ceremony spot and said their vows as the sunrise rose, filling the morning sky with soft light and muted colors. Our timing was perfect because after they finished their vows and a small celebration, hikers began arriving at this popular spot in the park. We moved a little for formal photos and some more exploration and then the marine layer fog began to roll in. It seemed that we would have three days worth of weather in 3 hours!

After the morning session the couple and their family went to breakfast and had a relaxing rest of their morning. I met them again in the afternoon where they roasted s’mores with their family and got ready again for the second portion of their adventure elopement day. We went back to the park where we hiked, went to the beach and watched the sunset. As the sunset and everyone else cleared off the rocks we stayed and sat enjoying the seclusion and the views.

I knew the moon would rise at any moment and so we walked into position to see it come up. Ankeeta shouted “that’s it!” and we all looked at the horizon and saw an absolutely huge orange ball rising in the distance. From moonset to moonrise their entire day had come full circle. It was full of so much love, unreal views, and it was everything they wanted and more. We all felt so content sitting out there taking in the vast beauty of a place like Acadia, and as the moon rose higher and the stars came out, Ankeeta and Jacob busted out their lightsabers for some even more fun and unique light writing. They battled one another, then created a heart, and then they attempted to write their elopement date with headlamps, which proved to be a difficult task.

These two could not have been more fun to hang out with. I’m so thankful they trusted me with their vision for their day, and it’s always so incredible when the actual elopement day not only lives up to their expectations, but exceeds it. From sunrise to sunset it was such a perfect day, and they were laid back and relaxed and able to savor ever moment of it. They included so many details unique to the two of them and their relationships. They were able to include family and their two dogs, which was incredibly important to them. Oh, and I forgot to mention they traveled to Maine from Florida where they are used to much warmer weather, but the temps didn’t bother them one bit. In the morning it was probably in the high 50’s, but they came prepared and enjoyed much warmer weather the rest of the day.

I think the day is best summed up by one of the GIF’s above where they finish saying their vows and Ankeeta can be seen jumping up and down for joy! Then Jacob scoops her up in his arms for their first kiss as a married couple. They radiate joy and happiness together. And tying the knot in the way that was truly them was the best gift they could give one another.
