Rhode Island is one of the premier places in the country for elopements. It is, after all, the Ocean State and has 400 miles of gorgeous coastline that includes cliffs, dunes, river rocks, and sandy open beaches. And while the coastline is a major attraction it also has beautiful forests, lakes, and rivers dotted with cute cabins if that’s more your style.

To be honest, my goal in life is to find a couple (or many!) who want to paddle to their own private island for their elopement. There are a ton of unoccupied islands in this state, just off the coast and in lakes and rivers. Many of them are simply a short paddle away. Have a boat? We can take that too! If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in Rhode Island.

Where to Elope in RI?

1. Lighthouse(s) on Public Lands

   From Beavertail to Point Judith to North Light on Block Island, these spots are honestly one of the most picturesque spots in the state, and a great spot to catch the sunset. Castle Hill is another option, but it is on private land and requires booking services with Castle Hill Inn. This is also close to Fort Adams State Park, which has incredible views of the Newport bridge, and is a great spot to visit any time of year. The rocky coastline in this area provides for a lot of exploration and scenery unique to Rhode Island, including tide pools. Check out this gallery.

2. Wood River

   The Wood River runs through the Arcadia Management Area, which is where a bulk of the scenic spots on the river can be found. One of the coolest spots is just north of Alton Pond. In the summer there are copious blueberry and raspberry bushes and calm, beautiful waters. There are several AirBnB’s couples can rent along the river, and there are rope swings and docks dotted along the shoreline. The river is cocooned in a canopy of big trees, which opens into marches and lakes in the wider spots. So if you want to elope summer camp style, this is a great option.

3. Moonstone Beach

   This beach, located right next to Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, can be tough to visit in the summer due to seasonal parking restrictions and to protect the breeding environment of piping plovers. However, if you can time it right this is one of the most beautiful beaches to elope on, and it is secluded due to the lack of parking and all the restrictions. 4. Napatree Point Conservation Area

   This point is one of the coolest places in the entire state. It’s a strip of land that juts out far into the Block Island Sound. It’s so narrow, you can walk back and forth from one side to the other, and there are incredible sand dunes and seagrasses that make for stunning photos. The point is long enough to find a little privacy the further out you walk. Parking can be a pain in the summer, but planning on a weekday elopement can help curtail that issue.

5. East Beach

   This is a wide beach with surprisingly clear waters and little infrastructure. There is over 3 miles of straight, undeveloped beachfront, a rare sight anywhere these days. An added bonus is that you can drive your 4x4 vehicle onto the sand, bring your dog, and even ride your horse on the beach outside of peak summer hours, naturally. In order to drive your vehicle on the beach (including camping vehicles), a Barrier Beach pass is needed. Find more information on the registration and use of 4x4 vehicles on the beach here.  

6. Block Island

   This spot is a favorite of Rhode Islanders and out-of-towners alike. From the incredible sunset views at North Light to the amazingly picturesque Mohegan Bluffs this island has all the makings of the perfect elopement adventure. There’s great food on the island, gorgeous accommodations, and taking the ferry over from the mainland is park of the fun! If you’re looking for a true island adventure elopement in Rhode Island, this is the spot for you! (NOTE: weekdays or planning very far in advance are a must for this spot. 7. Brenton Point State Park

   This park is in Newport, RI and perfectly situated to enjoy the sunset, and there are some more secluded spots tucked deep into the trails here. During the summer this becomes the premiere spot for kites of all shapes and sizes, so it’s windy, but all the kites add an aura of free-spirited ambiance. This also has 180-degree views of the water, and it’s located close to a few other spots on this list, so you could make a whole or half-day out of visiting several while fitting a ceremony in at your favorite spot.

8. Conimicut Point Park

   This park has a sand bar that extends into the Narragansett Bay at various distances depending on the tide. It’s close to Providence, so it makes for a nice half-day elopement and lovely views close to the city. There’s even a tiny chapel by the sea right next to the beach if you are looking to have a religious ceremony.

9. Second Beach (Sachuest Beach)

   While one of the most well-known beaches in the state located in Middletown, RI there is plenty of space to roam here. It is protected by sand dunes and sea grasses and it is right next to Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, with Third Beach on the other side. This area has so many options for incredible photos that it is hard to beat. If magical beach walks are the stuff your elopement dreams are made of, this spot might be the one for you. 10. South shore Beach

    This beach backs up to a delightfully undeveloped piece of land that has two ponds on it. There also aren’t a bunch of mansions overlooking the water here, which makes the view nicer in my opinion. There are dirt roads to gorgeous overlooks, and lots of cool tucked aways spots that don’t see a lot of tourists. This area is just a little “out of the way” in the best possible way.
    

    Bonus- Lincoln Woods State Park

    Lincoln Woods is a state park just outside of Providence, Rhode Island. It has a gorgeous lake, with islands you can paddle to in the middle for your own private ceremony. There are also rocky cliffs and lush forests with a ton of trails and nice scenic spots. Check out this gallery.

TRAVELING TO RHODE ISLAND

The Ocean State is a little convoluted when it comes to traveling around the state. The Narragansett Bay runs right up the middle, so although it’s a small state that should take less than an hour to drive across, it often takes longer due to needing to get on one of the many bridges. However, the bridges are one of the things that make this state so cool! I love shooting elopements at Fort Adams State Park because you can have a view of the iconic Newport Bridge in your ceremony. The 95 runs north to south making travel that direction easy, but you’ll want to venture off of it for the best views in the state.

WHERE TO STAY IN RHODE ISLAND

I always recommend checking VRBO when looking for places to stay and planning your elopement. Why do I recommend VRBO over Airbnb? Because Airbnb no longer allows any type of event to take place. If it’s just the two of you that’s not a problem, but if you want to have any friends or family over and just enjoy a simple dinner celebration together VRBO allows that. In fact, there’s a box that you can check labeled “events allowed” and VRBO only shows you places where you are allowed to host a few people for a dinner celebration. Again, Airbnb is a great option if you don’t plan to use it for a celebration. I especially like their unique stays which feature super cool places, like treehouses. Who doesn’t want to elope and stay in a treehouse? I know I do!

HOW DO YOU LEGALLY GET MARRIED IN RHODE ISLAND?

If both people live in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license at the city or town hall where either person lives. If only one person lives in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license from the city or town hall where the Rhode Islander lives. If neither person lives in Rhode Island, apply for a marriage license from the clerk's office in the city or town where the marriage ceremony will be performed.

Both people must provide a valid photo identification and a certified birth certificate. Check with the clerk’s office  in the city or town hall where you will apply for a marriage license for any requirements about approved forms of identification, proof of birth, or proof of address. If either person was married or in a legal relationship before, the applicant(s) must provide a certified final divorce decree/dissolution or a certified death certificate for the former spouse. A legal relationship includes marriage, civil union, common law marriage, or registered domestic partnership. A certified copy of a vital record must have a raised State seal on it.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET MARRIED IN RHODE ISLAND?

To obtain a marriage license, both parties must apply for the license in person at the city or town clerk’s office. The couple is required to complete the marriage worksheet and provide the required documentation. The clerk will then create the marriage license from the information provided. Both parties are required to sign both the worksheet and the marriage license in the presence of the city or town clerk. The fee for the marriage license is currently $24.00 payable to the city or town.

Known as the Green Mountain State, Vermont is the 14th wonder of the natural world. Ok, that’s not true, but what is true is that it is home to more than 100 19th-century covered wooden bridges and it’s a major producer of maple syrup with “sugar houses” all over the state. It boasts thousands of acres of mountain terrain which are crossed by hiking trails and skiing slopes. It’s charming and cozy, and from enchanting forests that hide incredibly beautiful waterfalls to the mountain peaks, there is something everyone will love.

Mt. Mansfield State Park is home to the tallest mountain and only one of two spots where you can get above treeline in the state. Nearby Camel’s Hump is the other. Lake Champlain is a huge lake that has private islands, a ferry across to New York, and incredible sunset views. Go north to Lake Willoughby and find an incredibly clear and beautiful lake with mountains rising straight up out of the sides.

Where to Elope in Vermont

Mt. Mansfield

The tallest mountain in the Green Mountain State is Mt. Mansfield, and there are a multitude of ways to get up this mountain. From May to early October, you can take the Auto Toll Road which costs $22 per private vehicle and an additional $9 per passenger. Their hours are 9am - 4pm and it open generally from Memorial Day to the second weekend in October. This road takes you to the Visitors Center near the top of the mountain, however, it’s still another 1.2 mile hike to reach the summit. And don’t be mistaken there are somewhat sheer faces, and temps can be in the 40’s and 50’s on the summit even when it’s a warm summer day at the base. You can also choose to take the gondola which is a shorter but steeper hike to the summit via the precarious cliff trail. Taking the Gondola Skyride costs adults (age 13+) $30, and children (age 5-12) $20, the Family Pack (2 adults, 2 children) is $85. This is also open generally from Memorial Day to the second weekend in Oct, however, it’s also open in the winter during ski season. The cliff trail is too dangerous to ascend in the winter, but you can walk around the top. Gondola hours are 10 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.

Of course, then there are hiking trails to the top. They range from 3 miles roundtrip (going straight up) to around 8 miles round trip. These are open all year except for mud season which generally lasts from April to late May when snow is melting rapidly and causing the trails to become basically waterfalls. Various Waterfalls

There are so many amazing waterfalls in Vermont and they are one of my favorite spots to take people to who have never been to Vermont before. When they see the clear and pristine waters flowing over the granite rock they can hardly believe it’s real. The water is a deep blue-green and it really does seem like something only seen in movies. Several are super popular swimming holes, so in the summer especially I highly recommend a sunrise ceremony. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a bunch of eager swimmers waiting to jump in the water during your ceremony. There are a few with only a short hike to the falls, making them great spots if you are eloping with some family that can’t walk far. Check out this gallery.

Stowe

Stowe has so many great hikes and options for ceremony spots with views. This is a favorite spot for winter elopers too because of the ski resort on Mt. Mansfield. The town itself is extremely charming, and there are a ton of great options for places to stay. There are short and easy waterfall hikes nearby, you can ride the gondola, or you can do a more strenuous hike and find a little more seclusion here too. Check out this gallery.

Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is a huge freshwater lake that runs the length of the top third of Vermont all the way to Canada. It lies on the eastern border of Vermont and on the western border of upstate New York. From the Vermont side you can see the Adirondacks in New York, and from the New York side, you can see the Green Mountains and Mt. Mansfield. There is a ferry across that is super fun to take if you are looking for a more interesting way to go from one side of the lake to the other. It’s around $10.75 for the driver and car, and then an additional $4.50 for passengers after that. The lake has numerous lake houses, VRBO’s, Airbnb’s, and resorts along the shoreline, along with some conserved lands for public access. It’s a great place for eloping couples to rent a place to stay and come back after an exciting and incredible elopement day to watch the sunset over the mountains and the lake. Lake Willoughby

Willoughby is a glacial lake over 320 feet deep in places second to only Lake Champlain whose deepest point reaches 400 feet. Lake Willoughby resembles a Norwegian fjord. There are a variety of hikes near the lake that allow for an elevated view of the lake and make for great ceremony spots. The water is beautiful and clear and this is also a great spot to canoe, paddleboard, or go boating.

Camel’s Hump

Hiking Camel’s Hump is a fairly strenuous 6-mile round trip hike, but the views from the top make it all worthwhile. Beautiful seemingly endless mountain layers stretch on for what feels like forever. Along with the nice views you get a challenge as well in terms of the hike. This won’t be ideal for everyone, but for those who want to experience the views and leave some of the crowds behind this might fit the bill.

Texas Falls Recreation Area

This is a gorgeous…gorge, haha. There is plenty of hiking to do here, and great views of the gorge, plus spectacular mossy trails in an old-growth forest. It’s a dreamy spot for those looking for quick and easy access to an intimate and beautiful area. Check out this gallery.

Smugglers Notch State Park

There are a ton of beautiful hikes in Smuggler Notch State Park near the Stowe area. One trail, in particular, leads to an incredible pond flanked by mountains on all sides. From here you can continue on and summit an awesome peak, which also has great views. It’s only a 2.3 round trip hike so there is a lot of beauty for relatively little exertion.

Emerald Lake State Park

Another state park with gorgeous views and crystal clear waters, but this one is actually in southern Vermont. This park is a favorite for outdoor recreation in the summer, but it’s just as pretty in the spring and the fall. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent right on the beach, and there are great hiking trails around the edge of the lake making finding a secluded ceremony spot a little easier. Haystack Mountain

A mountain in southern Vermont, the summit of Haystack Mountain has views of Haystack Pond down below, along with incredible views of the rest of the mountain range. It’s not an easy hike, but there is only about 1000 feet of elevation gain over the 2.5 miles up, making it not all that steep and therefore doable in a wedding dress. A lot of people also snowshoe this one in the winter.

Brousseau Mountain

This mountain falls in the far north of the state of Vermont. It’s a short hike to incredible views and it’s very lightly trafficked, making it an ideal spot for a more secluded elopement experience.

New Hampshire is known as the Granite State, and for good reason, because New Hampshire is home to the White Mountains and Mt. Washington, the region’s highest peak. Outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country and the world flock to the White Mountains to hike, ski, explore, and recreate. New Hampshire is defined by its quaint towns and large expanses of wilderness, and you can enjoy all the charm that New England has to offer paired with vast opportunities for outdoor adventure and fun.

Mt. Washington State Park is home to the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi. Lake Winnipesaukee is a huge lake that has private islands and incredible sunrise and sunset views, depending on the side you choose to explore. Go north to Dixville Notch and find an extremely steep and wild landscape that is a little more secluded, or take a drive down the world-renowned Kancamagus Highway, which boasts some of the best views on the entire east coast.

When planning an elopement it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in NH.

Where to Elope In NH

Cathedral Ledge

The spot is a favorite for those eloping with family or friends who can’t hike far. It’s an incredibly beautiful location that provides beautiful views of Echo Lake State Park below, as well as mountains in the distance. There is a road to the top and a small parking area, making the walk to the wedding location very short. However, because there is a road, it obviously attracts more crowds, and a permit is required in this location. Check out this gallery to see an actual elopement here.

Franconia Notch State Park

Franconia Notch State Park is an enchanting wonderland of beautiful elopement locations. The mountains rise up out of the lake and river valley here and the forests are just as incredible as the mountain tops. There are a ton of gorge-like features that have crystal clear water rushing over them. The first time I ever visited here I think I was left with my jaw on the ground. I couldn’t believe there were so many beautiful places packed into one small area. This area has so much to do and see it is the dream location for an all-day elopement where you want to sample a little bit of every type of landscape.

There are a few lakes with stunning mountain backdrops in this area. During the summer months, there is a fee to enter, and it is usually crowded with swimmers, so I only recommend it early in the morning or later in the evening. In the off-season, it is the perfect spot to take a stroll and see the lake in its full glory. There are also a few gorgeous and quick hikes leading to stunning overlooks of a lake and the mountains surrounding it. Also, right in this area is access to Cannon Mountain and its gondola which boasts incredible views and a lot of fun as an elopement day activity. Check out this gallery.

Pinkham Notch

Pinkham Notch is a mountain pass just south of the Mt. Washington area. It’s a favorite spot for backcountry skiers, hikers, and ice climbers. Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) runs a visitors center here, and it’s very close to Wildcat Mountain, the resort that is frequently cited as having the best views in New England. They have a gondola that you can take to the top as part of your elopement day, but the surrounding area has plenty to keep you occupied as well. There is a huge variety of hikes within a short distance. In fact, you don’t have to hike far at all to find lovely views here, but you also can hike a long way if you desire.

Mt. Washington

Mt. Washington State Park is home to Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. The great thing about Mt. Washington is that (during the summer months) it offers all the adventure without all the strenuous hiking. There is a road to the top, and there is also the famous and unique Cog Railway. There are options to take a biodiesel or steam train. The train is only at the summit for an hour, so if you’d like longer than that to explore the top, like having a ceremony at Lake of the Clouds, for instance, I would recommend taking the train up and then having family drive up the Auto Road. Auto Road rates are $35 for car and driver, plus $10 for additional adults. The Auto Road is open generally from early to late May depending on conditions to the early to late October, also depending on conditions. The Cog Railway is open all year but doesn’t run some days due to weather, and the winter summit is only partway up the mountain. Still a fun experience on a chilly elopement day.

Of course, you can hike as well. It is about 8 miles round trip with over 4,000 feet of elevation gain. That’s over 1000 feet of elevation gain per mile, which tends to be a steep grade. Check out this gallery.

Kancamagus Highway

The Kancamagus Highway, also known as New Hampshire Route 112 is a 56.39-mile-long east-west state highway in northern New Hampshire. It’s a designated scenic byway that takes you through a path cut through the White Mountain National Forest with breathtaking views of the White Mountains, the Swift River, Sabbaday Falls, Lower Falls, and Rocky Gorge. With so many places to stop and hike and see the sights, this makes for an ideal journey on your elopement day. The road goes through an old-growth forest that is not littered with resorts, houses, or other buildings. In fact, it’s not built up at all, it’s just pure nature at its best. Check out this gallery. Lake Winnipesaukee area

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire and located in the Lakes Region at the foothills of the White Mountains. One of my favorite hikes is in this area, and it’s a short and fairly easy one for eloping couples! The views from the surrounding mountains of the lake below are unstoppable, but then add that to exploring the lake itself! It’s a great place to find a secluded island, take a boat trip, rent a canoe, or practice your stand-up paddleboarding. There are so many options for activities during your elopement day that you’ll be left wondering how you can fit it all in.

Crawford Notch State Park

Crawford Notch State Park has 5,775 acres and has access to numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, fishing, wildlife viewing, and unreal mountain views. Just driving through this area you will be amazed by waterfalls falling off the face of mountains and beautiful swimming holes along the side of the road. Add that into the hiking trails and stunning views and it’s a perfect combination for people planning an active elopement. Start with one of my favorite incredible view hikes at sunrise, and end your elopement by jumping into a waterfall or mountain lake!

Dixville Notch State Park

This one is a little further off the beaten path in the far north part of the state of NH. And honestly, I would only recommend this spot to people who are not afraid of heights. This is an incredible area that has mountain lakes, waterfalls, gorgeous mountain views, and some extreme cliffs. The bonus of this spot is that with the exception of the cliff ledge itself, there is virtually no one else on the trails. Mt. Chocorua

How could I skip this beautiful mountain and its lovely mountain lake. In fact, it is New England's most photographed mountain. The hike to the top is strenuous, but you are awarded with 360 views at the top. So whether you choose to explore the lake and the base of the mountain (including trails to waterfalls) or go up to the summit, there are incredible views to be found.

Requirements to get Married in New Hampshire if you are from out of state:

You must be 18 years old or older, you must have a valid photo ID with your current address on it, you must have a valid marriage license from the state where you live or where the marriage will take place, and it must be signed by a judge or clerk of court. And finally, if you are divorced, you need to show proof that your divorce is final and that there is no chance of reconciliation with your spouse (e.g., death certificate). If you were previously married, you need to show proof that your previous marriage is final and that there is no chance of reconciliation with your spouse.

In the state of New Hampshire, witnesses are not required to be present at a wedding ceremony in order for a marriage to be considered legal. A couple can choose to have someone act as a witness at their ceremony, but they do not have to.
