New England and the entire Northeast region of the United States has some of the best views and landscapes in the country. For that reason eloping in New England is an adventure you will never forget. And whether you and your partner are looking to have a beautiful beach elopement or a mountain top adventure elopement, there is a perfect vista for you. I’m going to list some of my favorite outdoorsy spots in the northeast that are incredible locations to elope. The list below is in no particular order, because all of these spots are so gorgeous and it really depends on the landscape that the couple enjoys the most.

I have shot weddings or elopements in some of these locations, but not all of them. Upstate, New York | Finger Lakes, The Adirondacks, and The Catskills

The first time I set foot in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York I fell in love. This place is honestly a complete fairytale wonderland with magical waterfalls cascading off of cliffs, and old stone pathways that lead to unbelievably beautiful gorges carved out of the ancient rock. I’m DYING to shoot an elopement here, and there are so many incredible locations to choose from. When I show images of this place to most people they say it looks like another country, that it can’t possibly be in the United States. Most think it looks like Scotland or Ireland, and to be honest, it kind of does. So if you’re looking for a magical fairytale elopement in a place that looks like another country, you should choose the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. It is absolutely out of this world. There are also several gorgeous small wedding venues in this area that allow for easy access to many of the incredible views with just a short drive. I have to say that upstate New York has left me in awe more than a few times since I first started exploring it nearly 12 years ago. Each time I go back I find a waterfall or seven that leave more in love than the last time. A couple of summers ago I planned a mid-week trip to the Catskills for my husband and me, and we found ourselves just not leaving when we were supposed to. On the drive home, we found several more state parks and waterfalls to trail run around before driving back in the pitch black of night. I can’t express how much I love this place. The Catskills are so close to New York City couples wanting to elope, but not wanting to go far. There are so many gorgeous spots in this area, but Kaaterskill Falls and the Peakamoose area really stand out. Those spots have become so popular that they are now overcrowded in the summer. I highly recommend planning your elopement in an offseason and on a weekday to fully take advantage of the area at it’s finest.

Rhode Island Coastline

Another location that hits close to home is the rocky and breathtaking coastline of Rhode Island, which happens to be where I live. Eloping in Rhode Island is a favorite for beach lovers as the state has 400 miles of incredible coastline. That’s a lot of beauty for such a small state! The state also has some wild and beautiful undeveloped coast, which seems strange in such a populated place. Check out this article for more info about the best places to elope in Rhode Island. There are amazing rocky shores, there are sandy beaches, and because a lot of the beaches are south facing there are incredible locations for both sunrise or sunset ceremonies, a rarity on the east coast. The state boasts tiny private islands within paddling or boating distance, so finding seclusion is never a problem. Want a romantic lighthouse in the background? This is the state for you, there are several stunning lighthouses to choose from. White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains are probably what most people think of when they think of an epic adventure location in New England. This mountain range is home to Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet. The mountain range covers part of New Hampshire and into Maine. There are beautiful waterfalls, gorgeous mountain lakes, and the largest amount of terrain over the tree line in New England. Couples wanting to elope in the White Mountains will find that there are both short and long hikes to incredible views, and there is truly something for every kind of adventurer. I love this area in the winter, the temps and weather can be extreme, but also extremely peaceful. Hiking through quiet snow-covered forests to desolate and icy peaks is one of my favorite things, but admittedly difficult to do on a wedding day when brides hope to be wearing dresses and not 17 layers of down jackets. Something I love to suggest to couples if they love this landscape as well is to consider taking a gondola to the top of the mountain and doing a short hike to great views. Stowe and Burlington, Vermont

I’ve said this to so many couples at this point, and I stand by this as truth- there is no better place to elope than Vermont in the fall. Sure, the western United States has grand and epic vistas, but no place on earth has a better fall season than the northeast. There are endless mountain views and rolling hills absolutely covered in leafy trees turning shades of red, orange, yellow, and even purple. The small towns dotted all over Vermont and much of New England are enchanting and idyllic, and it is truly one of the most picturesque places in the country. I love when couples decide to say their vows along a misty riverside or on top of the highest peak in Vermont, Mt. Mansfield. One of the coolest things about Vermont in the fall is that the mornings are almost always foggy, but if it’s going to be a sunny day the sun will burn off the top layer, leaving unreal low-lying fog in the valleys. For a photographer, it’s an absolute dream come true if you can convince your couple to be up at sunrise to take advantage of the stellar views. It is super fortunate that the tallest mountain in the state has both an Auto Toll road and a gondola as options for reaching the summit. Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park, where the mountains meet the coast. This is such a unique and gorgeous landscape and a favorite of many New Englanders. Grab a couple of lobster rolls and go for a hike to a spot with a beautiful view, say your vows, make a grand toast, and enjoy your picnic. Or pick a spot along the coast that is an easy walk for friends and family who may be attending, and then lead a hike after the ceremony but before the celebration dinner. The Catskills, New York

These mesmerizing rolling hill mountains will leave you wanting to return over and over again. One of my favorite spots within the Berkshires is a little place called Bash Bish Falls. The first time I visited this place my husband and I both noted how it felt like Oregon. There is a wide gentle path down to the falls, and when we turned the corner to head down I was blown away by what I saw in front of me- a 59’ waterfall gushing with crystal clear waters into a beautiful pool and running through a forest of tall, lush trees. Like so many of the areas on this list, there are a million amazing secret spot locations, but you just have to know what you’re looking for. Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts

The giant sand dunes and seagrasses of Cape Cod make for a stunning backdrop for any elopement. Standing high above the ocean you can see for miles and miles. Taking a boat ride out to Martha’s Vineyard or another of the surrounding islands makes for a great pre or post-wedding activity. This landscape is so large, you just have to walk long enough and you can manage to lose the crowds. The little towns on the peninsula are idyllic and wonderful spots for some friends and family to explore in the days surrounding the wedding if you plan to include them in your elopement.

How to Plan Your Massachusetts Elopement

So you’re engaged and now you’re looking for the best places to elope in Massachusetts. Luckily, Massachusetts is one of the leading places in the country for elopements and I offer a variety of Massachusetts elopement packages. From its incredible east coast dotted with islands and beautiful beaches to its mountainous western slope that boasts great views and plenty of forest land. Because of the varied landscape, the first thing you’ll need to decide is what type of view you’re looking for on your elopement day. If you’re into waterfalls, rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests, stick to the western part of the state. And if you’re looking for beaches, sand dunes, seagrasses, lighthouses, and islands, you’ll find those on the eastern side. Maybe proximity to family is important as well. Keep all of these things in mind, but remember that Massachusetts is a relatively small state in terms of driving distances, and you can drive across the whole area in about 3.5 hours.

When planning an elopement, especially one in the summer months, it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Where to Elope in MA?

Cape Ann Peninsula

One of my friends grew up here and several years ago my then-boyfriend, now husband and I attended her wedding here. We were blown away by the crystal clear waters, I mean, really shockingly clear, and the lighthouse views, sandbars, and quintessentially quaint towns certainly didn’t hurt. There is a lot of private property on the peninsula, so I usually recommend that couples either rent an Airbnb with a great view and they can hold the ceremony there. However, if you are from here or know people from the area it is much easier to get access to some incredible sites for wedding ceremonies. Beyond that, it’s great to explore the beaches’ incredible views for photos after the ceremony.

Borden Flats Lighthouse

Ok, someone please hire me to shoot part of your elopement at Borden Flats Lighthouse ASAP! I say part of your elopement because it is an active lighthouse in the middle of the bay, so once you get out there for the evening, there’s not much to do but take in the view. Obviously, the photos would be phenomenal, but I would recommend spending part of your day exploring the mainland and then jumping on the private boat that takes you out to this beautiful spot at 5 pm, which is check-in time. You can host a little celebration with a few guests on the lighthouse and then the sunset photos would be incredible as you’re surrounded by 360 degrees of water! The guests and I can hop back on the private boat, as only two people are allowed to stay the night as honorary guest lighthouse keepers. What an incredible and unique wedding experience. But this place books up fast, and you need to plan up to a year in advance to make sure you secure your stay here.

The Berkshires

This is a large area, but I couldn’t just choose one spot, and I’m always finding new ones, so I’m including the general region here, which encompasses the westernmost portion of the state. The rolling forested mountains here make up the predominant views, and I always think of low lying fog when I think about the area as well. it has a sort of magical, mystical, ethereal nature to it. Some of the best spots here are Bish Bash Falls and Jiminy Peak, which are both detailed further below.

Bash Bish Falls

At 80 feet, this is the tallest single-drop waterfall in the state. Bash Bish can be found right on the border of Massachusetts and New York. It is part of a larger State Park area that joins Taconic State Park in New York and Bash Bish Falls State Park in MA. The trail is about 2 miles round trip from the MA side, and it’s wide and relatively flat most of the way through a gorgeous old-growth forest. There are a number of gorgeous spots to stop and take in the river scenery along the way. This is a crowded area in the summer and I highly recommend choosing a weekday or the offseason if you decide to elope here.

Nantucket

This island holds hands down one of the coolest spots in the state for elopements, Great Point Light. It’s on a nature preserve, it’s secluded, and spectacularly beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset. And the cool part is that it has great views in every direction. This area has sand road access, and if you’re not comfortable driving your car out there it’s a bit of a hike. It’s an adventure for sure, and one with super rewarding views and some solitude. Not to mention the rest of the island, which is really a perfectly idyllic place. First, start by taking the ferry over from the mainland, stay at one of the many spectacular properties, preferably with a view, and make sure to eat your way through town as well.

Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard is a little bit more built up and crowded than Nantucket, partly because it’s only 7 miles from shore and Nantucket is 30, but it’s also the bigger island of the two. There is less in the way of public lands for wedding ceremonies, but there are plenty of places to rent for the occasion. The island also has interesting topography and some cliffs and rolling hills. In fact, the Aquinnah Cliffs on the west side of the island are a spectacular spot for photos, and there is also a picturesque lighthouse there. Access is a bit easier to Martha’s Vineyard as it is only a 35-minute ride over on the ferry. Check out this gallery.

Cape Cod National Seashore

The first time I visited this place I was absolutely in awe of the GIANT sand dunes, the vast coastal views, and the barreling waves. I had never seen a place quite like it. Here’s the thing about Cape Cod National Seashore, it can get Busy with a capital “B” during the summer season. But if you’re willing to walk through the sand and the dunes for a while, you can always find a little seclusion. Most people stay close to the parking lots and facilities, so if you have a bit of an adventurous side, you can hike to the ceremony spot. If you have older guests joining for the day, eloping on the public lands in this area becomes a bit more difficult, and I would recommend one of the great small wedding venues in the area that boast incredible views and easy to access facilities for older guests. But if it’s just of the two of you and you’re willing to walk a little, there are some awesome secluded spots in this area. Check out this gallery.

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort

This is more a small outdoor wedding location than an elopement, but I thought I’d add a couple of these in to mix it up. Jiminy Peak offers the option to hold your ceremony at the summit of the mountain by taking the chairlift to the top. How cool is that?! If you have some guests that are less than excited to ride the chair lift you can opt for the Brookside ceremony location under the canopy of trees and near a babbling brook. There are also options for reception spots. The Clark Room accommodates up to 40 guests and is a great indoor/outdoor space with a deck that has views of the slopes.

Bascom Lodge, Mount Greylock

Bascom Lodge is an awesome place to hold a small outdoor wedding if you’d like to invite some friends and family who may not be up for a hike but still love the mountains. There are beautiful views on the grounds, and they have a gorgeous enclosed porch that works as a lovely dining area. They only allow up to 50 guests, so it’s a dream location for a couple who wants the stunning views and a detailed and lovely space for an intimate reception all in one place.

How Do You Get Legally Married in Massachusetts?

To get married in Massachusetts you will need to be at least 18 years old. You will need to fill out the marriage license, which can be done in person or by mail. After your application is processed, you will receive a marriage license. You can then have your ceremony within 180 days from the date

The diverse and vast landscape of upstate New York happens to be one of the best places in the Northeast region and the country for elopements. From its incredible mountains and lakes to the stunning waterfalls and gorges, New York has so many options for those looking for a more adventurous wedding. New York is a huge state, so there are tons of options for incredible views. The further north and west you go you’ll find a little more seclusion, but some of the most incredible spots can be found just a few hours from New York City. So decide whether you’d like to get married with a waterfall backdrop, mountain views, or on a boat in the middle of a pristine lake. Regardless of what you choose, New York has something that will make your jaw drop in awe. Most places do require permitting of some sort for your ceremony. When planning an elopement, especially one in the summer months, it is always best to plan on a weekday. If you plan on having no guests, or just your immediate families, it is ultimately less expensive, plus easier to plan ceremonies with fewer crowds. Here are some of the best spots to elope in NY.

1. The Catskills

   The Catskills are only a few hours outside of New York City, making them a close getaway spot for city dwellers, but it’s easy to get immersed in nature here, with huge cascading waterfalls, great hikes, and crystal clear rivers and streams. One of the most notable places in this area is Kaaterskill Falls, which drops 231 feet into beautiful pools. It’s a free-hanging waterfall, so you can walk underneath it for a super unique vista. There are also great views from a viewing platform and from the top of the falls. Other amazing spots include the crystal clear waters of the Peakamoose area and beautiful hikes like Giant Ledge. Because of its proximity to NYC, it does get crowded on the weekends, and even some weekdays in the summer, but it is spectacular and as long as you plan your ceremony in the morning or on a weekday in the off-season you should be able to find some seclusion.

2. Minnewaska State Park

   This spot is also close to NYC making it crowded on the weekends. But if you can catch this area at the right time it’s one of the most stunning places for photos. The jagged cliff sides surrounding Lake Minnewaska with mountains in the background make for a truly epic photo op. Some of my favorite spots include Sam’s Point and Awosting Falls. This area is also just about an hour from Hawks Nest Highway, which is one of the most epic and scenic drives in America, especially in the fall.

3. The Finger Lakes

   From waterfalls that plunge 215 over rocky cliffs (making it the highest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains) to stunning gorges, lakes and mountains, there is something for everyone in the Finger Lakes. There are amazing viewing spots from the top of the falls, and one of them makes the perfect ceremony site. You do have to get a permit from the park system and hold your ceremony outside of peak days and hours, but the scenery hardly gets any better than this. I’m happy to help answer any questions about permitting in these locations because I’ve been through the process with couples before! You can also hike to the base of the falls here and take in all the magnificence from the bottom. It’s a little louder down before, but the images are worth it.

   The entire area is magical, and it looks more like Scotland than New York. Glaciers helped shaped the landscape during the Pleistocene era and created hanging valleys. There are dozens of waterfalls along miles of incredible trails, and some with stone walkways built into the canyon walls. It’s an incredible work of art by Mother Nature. The surrounding area is full of several other hanging valley’s that make up the region known as the “Finger Lakes”. There is a ton of fun outdoor activities to do in a small area, and cute towns dotted mostly at the southern end of the lakes. It’s a truly unique section of the country that deserved a few full days of exploring. Check out this gallery.

4. Whiteface Mountain

   Whiteface Mountain is a private resort that often hosts weddings and events during it’s after hours. The coolest part is that you could have the entire mountain summit to yourselves. The mountain summit is accessible via driving to the top and then taking up the elevator up a bit more. The incredible views looking out over the Lake Placid region with incredible views of the Adirondacks and Lake Placid itself. There is plenty of hiking around the mountaintop, and this is a perfect place to host a small outdoor wedding where you’d love to have some friends and family involved as well. If you’re into waterfalls as well and want both the mountain and waterfall experience, Whiteface mountain is close to High Falls Gorge- a spectacular 22 acre, privately owned nature park on the AuSable River that features several stunning waterfalls.

5. Rocky Mountain

   This short 1-mile round trip hike packs a lot of view for its short hike. It’s near Inlet, NY and the view overlooks the Adirondack Mountains and Fourth Lake. It’s a lovely spot if you’d like to have family and friends join, but don’t want them to have to hike very far. The view of the rolling mountains and the lake is great at any time of year, but especially in the fall. During the winter you and guests will need to use microspikes for hiking safety, but with some snow on the ground, it is a killer view for a short hike. Plus the crowds are likely to be thin.

6. Indian Head

   One of the most iconic views in the Adirondacks, this hike makes you work a bit for the views. It is a 9-mile round trip, but a good portion of it is on a relatively flat dirt road. Still, only take on this hike if you are in relatively good shape, and make sure your photographer can handle it, too. But the beauty of a longer hike is that the crowds are likely to be thinner by the time you arrive. This is a popular spot, but the area has a ton of hikes so the most difficult part is getting a parking spot at the trailhead. This is usually not a problem on a weekday. The reward is vast views of Lower Ausable Lake looking southwest. It’s a great spot to catch the sunset and the stars come out. Just make sure you bring a headlamp for the long hike out in the dark!

7. Adirondack Woodcrafts Camp

   Want the complete summer camp experience for your outdoor wedding? Adirondack Woodcrafts Camp is the spot for that! The 250-acre property which encompasses two pristine lakes and borders the winding Moose river. It is in an area far away from any light pollution, so the starry night skies are incredible. They have a dining hall and a lodge that make for the perfect indoor/outdoor wedding experience. You can canoe on their private lake, hike the trails on the grounds, and even rent bikes if you’d like. This is the spot for you if you’d like all your friends and family to be able to join you in the outdoor adventures over the course of a whole weekend.

8. Garnet Hill Lodge

   Garnet Hill Lodge has a ton of options for scenic ceremony sites. From secluded hikes on the grounds to canoes and kayaks that are free for use when staying with them, this place takes care of a variety of wants and needs for eloping couples. You can rent out the lodge and host your small outdoor wedding on the back lawn with boasts incredible views of the Adirondack Mountains and Thirteenth Lake with easy access and nice accommodations for guests. The reception can be catered by the restaurant and they have incredible homemade pies. Or you can elope by hiking to one of the more scenic spots on the property. One of the hikes becomes shorter by taking a canoe short cut across the lake- talk about a fun, multi-activity shortcut! Check out this gallery.

9. Letchworth State Park

   Letchworth State Park is known as the “Grand Canyon of the East” and for good reason. The park is 17 miles long, following the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over several large waterfalls. If you like waterfalls, especially big ones, this might be your place. There is also a hot air balloon tour company, called Balloons Over Letchworth, so if riding a hot air balloon over an incredibly scenic area sounds like your kind of adventure day, this is the place for you. The best times of year to visit are summer and fall, but the park is open year round and is absolutely astonishing in any season.

10. Heart Lake

Historic Newport, RI not only offers crazy beautiful beaches, but numerous amazing state parks, a super cute downtown area, and tons of historic sites as well. This is one of the best spots in New England to elope with a ton of options if you are looking for a place with both great beaches and other amenities. The only downside here is that it can be very crowded in the summer months. This is a great off-season or mid-week elopement choice.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island may as well be called the land of magic for elopements. So many of my favorite elopement moments have happened here. From dancing in the rain while the seals watch, to frolicking down dunes with a perfectly picturesque lighthouse in the background and no one else for miles.

Jamestown beaches, Rhode Island

These are some of my favorite mainland RI beaches because they have so much more than just sand. Epic cliffs and trees, check. Incredible historic sites, check. And even the film location of one of my favorite Wes Anderson flicks, Moonrise Kingdom, check! If Wes Anderson is filming here, you know it’s aesthetically pleasing, with perfect coves tucked away inside looming coastal cliffs. I’ve lived in both San Diego and Rhode Island, and in terms of coastal beautiful RI give CA a run for it’s money.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The Cape has endless swathes of incredible coastal dunes, and honestly, this is one of my favorite places to suggest if people want a beach location that is away from everything. There are a bunch of 4x4 sand roads back here that can take you away from it all and boast secluded lighthouses and scenic beaches with both incredible sunrises and sunsets. With the right permitting one of my favorite things to do here is have a fire on the beach as part of the after-celebration.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Just a short ferry ride from Woods Hole in Cape Cod, this island transports you to another dimension. Every single color in the rainbow can be found at Aquinnah Cliffs, and one of the coolest lighthouses I’ve seen is within walking distance of the cute downtown corridor here. All in all, it’s the perfect place to elope on the beach and then have a clambake to celebrate.

Ogunquit Beach, Maine

I’ll call this Maine’s version of Jamestown in RI, but this area is truly unique on its own. Walk the forest-lined trees to the coastal cliffs and find a place completely your own to say your loving vows to your partner.

Narragansett, Rhode Island

I won’t give away my favorite spot for elopers here, but this is another great example of the perfect place for couples who want some solitude, but also be close to other great amenities. A short hike brings you to unreal coastal cliffs and historic ruins. The greenery on the hiking path is often bursting with fragrant flowers in the summer months as well!

Baxter State Park

Connecticut has 4 requirements for getting married. To get married in Connecticut, you must be at least 18 years old (or have parental consent), have a valid driver's license or official identification card, not be married to someone else, and not be related by blood to your spouse.

Top Small Wedding Venues in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is one of the best places in New England and in the U.S. to hold a small outdoor wedding. If you love coastline, wildlife, insane sunrise and sunset views, and a variety of great small wedding venues then Rhode Island should be on the top of your wedding list. There are a ton of spots with epic views, and the great thing about this tiny state is that it has over 400 miles of coastline that faces north, east, west, and south. So unlike other east coast locations, there are a variety of sunset view locations, of course, many sunrise spots as well, but also many scenic spots to watch the stars come out and the milky way rise over the ocean. So if you’re a beach bum, forest fanatic, or a fan of lakes, ponds, and rivers, Rhode Island has some of the best scenery you can imagine.

When your group is larger than 15 people, but you still want those gorgeous outdoor adventure wedding vibes, it makes sense to rent a private space that has that feel, but can accommodate your guests with comfortable chairs, facilities, and a gorgeous spot to celebrate after the ceremony. That doesn’t mean we can’t sneak away for an hour and shoot couple’s portraits at a lighthouse, but it makes things logistically easier with a larger crowd. Here are a few of my favorite small wedding venues in Rhode Island.

1. The Preserve RI, Richmond

   Although this is a non-waterfront location it’s one of my favorites because this spot has magical forest and rolling hill vibes instead. So if you’re into a more remote feeling small wedding, this might be what you’re looking for. I particularly recommend this location in the spring when the flowers are in bloom. I mean how incredible would it be to have your getting ready photos done at their amazing treehouse retreat. Are you a fan of Lord of the Rings? How about hosting your cocktail hour at the incredible Maker’s Mark Hobbit House? Plus they have so many things for you and your guests to do from canoeing and kayaking to ziplining and rock climbing. Fill your weekend with adventure, fun, and beautiful experiences!

2. Castle Hill, Newport

   When I think of Castle Hill, I think of one of the most iconic and picturesque lighthouses in the whole state of Rhode Island. Their grounds are stunning, the sunset views are amazing, and you can choose from lantern-lit gardens and white sandy beaches, ideal for warm-weather Newport, RI weddings. They have this whole getting married thing down and they can assist you with the catering, flowers, and other details you might need help with. That’s right they have their own personal in-house wedding planners to make all your dreams come true for your intimate seaside sunset wedding.

3. Lavender Waves Farm, South Kingstown

   Imagine your stunning day surrounded by intensely purple lavender with the incredible smell wafting through the air. Lavender Waves Farm is a private farm you can rent for your small outdoor wedding. Located in South Kingstown it’s close to a number of other incredible spots that are great for couple’s portraits, like Point Judith and East Beach. Bonus- there’s no need for a florist when you hold your wedding at a lavender farm!

4. Various Venues, Block Island

   Block Island is a stunning wedding site with out-of-this-world ocean views, lighthouses, dunes, shockingly gorgeous beaches, and lots of beautiful pockets to explore. There are a lot of great venues and vendors on the island. So take the ferry over from the mainland, rent some scooters, explore the island for photos, and genuinely enjoy the hell out of your magical wedding day.

5. Private VRBO’s that Allow Events

   This is one of my favorite suggestions because you can come up with places you never dreamed you could hold your wedding at, and you have a place to stay as well! When searching for a place to hold your small outdoor wedding, make sure you go into their filters and check “Event’s Allowed” to filter to only the locations that allow events. You can also add other filters like “Pets Allowed” or “Waterfront” to really customize your amazing experience. I’ve found incredible treehouses, stunning beachfront property with private beach access, so if you want to include a clambake reception, make sure you check this out as an option. 6. Cove Cabin, Mount Hope Farm, Bristol

   This site is one of my favorites because it has a truly “in the middle of nature” vibe. Your entire guest list can stay here with you, giving it the summer camp wedding feeling. Cove Cabin sits on the water’s edge of Mount Hope Bay, with unreal views of Seal Island, the Mount Hope Bridge, and Narragansett Bay. It was built in the 1940s as an Adirondack-style family retreat, the area and its adjacent lawn offer breathtaking views of the Bays. The Cabin can host up to 60 guests. Sunsets are spectacular and on a clear day, the Mount Hope Bridge frames the Newport Bridge at the opposite end of Narragansett Bay. Plus there are lush forests and lots of greenery on the property giving a truly unique aesthetic.

7. Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

   Naturally, an iconic Rhode Island view is the Newport Bridge. So you may as well host your small wedding here. They have a ton of ceremony spots to choose from, parking is easy, and sunsets are incredible from this spot. They help orchestrate your day and have a variety of vetted vendors to choose from. 8. Harbor Lights, Warwick

   They have incredibly gorgeous setups that can include a harborview ceremony overlooking the Narragansett Bay. Want to add more adventure to your day? They have the option to do a sunset cruise on the water. And they face west so the sunsets at this spot are unreal. They can help you figure out the catering, decor, and all the little details that will make your micro-wedding your dream day.

9. Ocean House, Westerly

   Another stunning waterfront location where the possibilities are endless. You can set up your intimate reception table on the private beach or hold your ceremony on the lawn. They have tents if the weather turns, and can generally match whatever feel you’d like to bring to your day from casual and laid back to high-end and elegant.

10. The Boathouse, Tiverton

    The Boathouse hosts small weddings with up to 48 people total on their stunning property on Sakonnet River with brilliant panoramic views. You can get married on the private dock, so literally over the water, or on the lawn, and they also cater the celebration after. 11. Shepherd’s Run, South Kingstown

    Shepherd’s run is a new event venue and winery. It is full-service, so if you want to not worry about any of your wedding day decisions, let them take care of that for you. Wedding ceremonies can be held in the Beatrix Farrand designed walled garden, and there are 36 acres total to choose from.

12. Blueberry Cove Inn, Narragansett

    The adorable bed and breakfast helps you with all the little details. The innkeeper also serves as an officiant, and they take care of the flowers, cake, and champagne toasts as well. They have a beautiful lawn and they are very close to a lot of scenic spots for great couples portraits on the coast.

13. South County Museum, Narragansett

    The Museum is a seven-acre campus located on the 174-acre Canonchet Farm Park, two miles off US 1 in Narragansett. It’s just a five-minute walk from Narragansett Town Beach. They only host weddings are hosted from May through October and you can choose from the lawn or in the ivy-covered stable ruins. It is a more DIY setup and you arrange for tents & rental equipment. There is plenty of parking, but no heating or air conditioning.

Okay, that was a lot of info, but there are a ton of great spots in Rhode Island for an outdoor adventurous small wedding. Remember, it’s your day, so you can go canoeing, and then get married later in the day. Your wedding day should include exactly what you want it to include and nothing that you don’t. Why You NEED to Stay Out After Sunset on Your Elopement Day

When the sun goes down and blue hour sets in, a lot of couples think it’s time to pack up and call it a night or head indoors for their celebration, but others opt to stay out under the night sky and see what kind of show the evening will put on for them. From catching the full moon rising, to dancing your first dance around a campfire under the milky way- I promise, it’s worth it to stay out after dark if you have a photographer who knows how to capture those low light situations. This happens to be one of my specialties, so here are some of my favorite ways to capture couples in love after the sun goes down.

Full Moon Rise

If it’s a full moon night, the full moon rises as the sun sets, and you don’t have to stick around long to catch the moon rising. Along with casting a lot of light on a night sky scene, a full moon rising often looks giant and yellow when it’s lower in the sky. It’s an amazing thing to see, and a lot of couples find that it’s a moment they love to soak in and enjoy.

Milky Way

The core of the Milky Way is only visible in the Northern Hemisphere from March to October. But if you don’t want to stay up very late or get up very early the best time to include the Milky Way in your elopement photos is from mid-June to early October. This is because in mid-June the core of the Milky Way rises just after sunset, and over the course of the summer and into the fall that time gets earlier. So by the time October rolls around the Milky Way can be seen in the night sky for only a brief time before it sets in the dark.

Star Trails

The Milky Way, while spectacular, is not the only way to enjoy the night sky and capture great photos during your elopement. Even on a night when the Milky Way is not visible, it is still possible to capture otherworldly night sky landscapes, like star trails. Star trails are the images above with the stars streaking in a circle across the sky. This type of image is created by taking a series of long exposure images and stitching them together in post-production. For this to work, you just need a (mostly) cloudless night, and a location that has a clear view of the sky to the north. I compose the shot with my camera pointed toward Polaris, the north star, and then I position the couple. The couple only needs to stand still for a few long exposure shots, normally 10 to 30 seconds per shot, and then my camera keeps running, and time-lapses the scene for the next hour or two. While that’s happening sometimes the couple heads out for the night, and sometimes we eat s’mores over the campfire. Either way, I’m happy to continue sitting under the stars while the camera continues capturing the scene.

Campfire

While you’re out either waiting for the Milky Way to rise or just hanging out beneath the stars, another amazing way to capture love under the night sky with limited light is by having a campfire. Along with keeping you warm, it provides a beautiful, natural light that beckons you to snuggle up. Please practice Leave No Trace principles and use an existing fire ring. There are so many amazing options for capturing love around a fire, not to mention the flame symbolism!

Starry Night Sky

Sometimes you end up in a location with a lovely cloudless night, but you can’t see the view facing north, there is no full moon rising, and the Milk Way isn’t rising until later. That’s ok, and taking photos under the stars still looks cool! Even if it’s just for the experience of staying out late and watching the night sky with your loved one, I’ve never had a couple say they regretted staying out under the stars on their wedding night!

When is the best time of year to capture the night sky?

The best time of year to capture the night sky, in general, is when there are no clouds. As mentioned above, the core of the Milky Way can only be seen in the Northern Hemisphere from March to October, and it’s generally nicer to hang out at night when it’s not too cold outside. That said, winter is still a great time to see the stars in places like the desert southwest. Although it’s still cold and you won’t see the core of the Milky Way, star trail potential is great. In addition to taking the above into consideration, a full moon makes it’s hard to capture the stars, so it’s best to plan around the moon if you’re set on getting star photos.

Where are the best locations to elope with a chance to see a starry night sky?

In general, the desert is one of the best places to see the night sky. There are a few reasons for this. First, it is impossible to take good night sky photos with a lot of light pollution, so you need to be far enough away from metro areas to not have the light leak into your photo. It’s easy to get to the middle of nowhere in the desert. And second, the desert sky is often cloudless, which removes another big obstacle to astrophotography. Lastly, you will find unobstructed views in all directions in the desert. It’s harder to take great night sky photos deep in a forest, just because it’s more difficult to find a somewhat open view of the sky.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t take night sky photos if your elopement is in a different location. It’s best to chat with your photographer to find out what is possible for your elopement day and location.

How long do we have to stand still?

Generally only 10 to 30 seconds at a time for a total of about a minute or two. I always like to take a few frames with the couple in the shot so I can pick the best, most crisp one.

If it’s partly cloudy outside is it still possible? What about if it’s windy?

If it’s partly cloudy it is still possible to take night sky photos, but it is likely not possible to do star trails. This is because you need an hour stretch of cloudless sky to keep the final image consistent. If clouds move through the frame they can ruin the entire image. Although, as you can see with one of my star trail images above, there are clouds running through the frame. High, thin, and wispy clouds don’t ruin the image as much as other types, because they look as though they flow through the frames better than puffy clouds. If it is completely cloudy, but not raining, your only option is to do campfire photos, and no night sky will be possible unless the clouds open up. If it’s raining, it’s probably best to get out of the rain.

If it’s windy, it may be harder to hold still, and your clothes might move even if you don’t. I think that’s okay and I still like many of the images that were taken on windy nights!

What’s the best way to plan for night sky photos during our elopement?

The best way to plan for it is to have a photographer who can keep you updated on what phase the moon will be in, what the weather looks like, and which location would give you the best chance for success. I can’t stress enough that if a night sky photo is important to your elopement that you hire someone with the proven ability to handle a variety of night sky conditions and someone who is knowledgable about astrophotography. It is a style of photography that can’t be faked and takes years to master.
